I tested this alto sax mp (NC5) side by side with a Vandoren Optimum and a metal mp similar to the Otto Link. Both of the HR pieces used a Rovner lig and 2.5 reed. The metal mp had great projection and volume. Certainly the loudest and edgiest of the three. The Rousseau was more mellow and easier to play, and still had decent volume. The Vandoren was in between the two - quite loud and edgy for a HR mp. For orchestra work, the Rousseau will blend nicely, and for mellow solo (not rock or jazz) work it would also do a fine job. The Vandoren would be better for rock/jazz music, and a good choice if a metal mp was just too much volume/edge.
I read other reviews on how the low notes were easier on this piece than the S-80, but that wasn't my experience. It does play a little louder than the Selmer. Another concern was none of my ligatures fit this mouthpiece correctly. They were too small as this piece is really thick. There are better mouthpieces out there, like the Brilhart, that are cheaper.
I am a clarinet and sax teacher for young high school aged students in Germany. All my kids play Yamaha saxopohones, either the 275 or th 62. Over the years I have tried most all the popular saxophone mouthpieces and find the Rousseau "New Class 4" to work best with beginning players and young people. I pesonally play the "R" model but the NC4 seems to have a better sound and reeds are easier to find for the less experienced player. I have never tried the NC3, but my expeience tells me that the NC5 is to open for beginners. I find the NC4 to be an excellent mouthpiece and recommend it highly.
Just received my new NC4 mouthpiece, and am very satisfied. I am a novice player and feel that I am sounding much better with less effort. If you are looking to upgrade your mouthpiece I highly recomend the NC4.
NC4 is a great mouthpiece. Much easier to play quietly than with a C* S80. More back pressure at high volumes due to smaller tip opening, but a small price to pay for a darker sound (fewer high overtones) more appropriate for classical playing. Easier to use stiffer reeds than with a C*. Big improvement over the original R Series Rousseau mouthpiece. Also compared to Selmer Larry Teal model and a few Vandoren pieces, and prefer the NC4.
