I have been playing on a C* for the past four or five years, and i was satisfied with the sound. Recently, though, I heard from my teacher that these E. Rousseau mouthpieces were worth trying, so I tried out the 5R and the NC4 on a V16 3 1/2. The 5R, which i tried first, was more responsive in the low register, but the altissimo range was slightly more difficult than usual. It also had an airy tone. The NC4, on the other hand, gave me the best tone I have ever had, and the best low register I have ever had, with the small expense of a less-responsive altissimo register (which, by the way, had better tone once I finally got the notes out). All in all, this NC4 is the best classical mouthpiece I have ever played on.
I have tried numerous mouthpieces, from the Selmer C* (both s80 and s90 facings) to Morgan?s, and I have found that none give the tone quality and response that the Rousseau NC4 gives. It is truly and exceptional mouthpiece, and something worth looking at, especially if you aren't pleased with the C* line of mouthpieces as I was. Not only do I find this to be true, but a good portion of my Saxophone Studios prefers the Rousseau line of mouthpieces over the Selmer's.
This mouthpiece is by far the smoothest and sweetest sounding classical mpc I've ever played on. I'm big into jazz, but I really needed a good classical mpc for symphonic season. This one is the one to buy. The sound is pure and clear. I use this mpc on my Yanigasawa 991 Alto along w/ hemke reeds. It's a great combination. This mpc takes some breaking in, but then again what mpc doesn't?! This is by far the best of the best.
I have used a Rascher alto mouthpiece since 1972 for orchestral, concert band and wind ensemble work and have never received a complaint from conductors. One of my students started using a Rousseau NC4 and I was impressed with the sound; it's the closest to the Rascher that I've heard with more projection, perfect for the concert band or wind ensemble as it blends well with other instruments.I now recommend this mouthpiece for all of my private students.
This is a surperior mouthpiece especially those students who own a student Yamaha or Bundy alto saxophone. It is by no means of the same quality of a Selmer C* or Vandorean but for the motivated student looking to upgrade from the stock student mouthpiece this is a great alternative.
