Back in 1960, I was sitting in my flat in Edinburgh, having tea with a friend of mine named Jack Bruce. He was telling me about a band in Liverpool that was becoming great. They were the Beatles. Then in 1965, I was in the studio with them, watching and learning from the best. The guitar I had with me was an Epiphone Regent-style guitar, and after the recording studio tour, i went to Paul's house and jammed with him. That guitar helped me play a few rounds with them, and eventually I would start my own band, but two years later. My band would go on to open for the Lennon's Plastic Ono Band, before he asked me to play a show with him. The Epi lead me to check out the 335 style Dot. Now I dont have a budget, Ive made plenty over the years, but i played the Dot and I fell in love. I used it and many gigs and at the Glastonbury Festival. I played it at halftime of the NBA Finals in 1993, when I was doing some backup work for another artist. It has lasted me 23 years, and it is my main guitar, but now I have retired. The guitar has more miles on it than my car, and if it could talk, I'm sure it would have a lot to say. Thank you Epiphone, for the sound I couldn't have gotten anywhere else! JLC
Since the mid-sixties the hollow body sound has been a mainstay of my music, the ability to achieve clear ringing tones that one can only get from humbuckers and the crunch you need when things get hot - all in one instrument. The harmonic feedback one can easily achieve with this guitar makes it a must have both live and in the studio. The Epiphone is well and solidly built; the finish is great, not that fake solid color, but one that lets the wood grain show through. The nut width is a bit wider than a Stratocaster, but still easy to manage with light gauge strings. The pickups are well made and have a great vintage tone (I replaced mine once with '57 humbuckers and ended up changing them back - the originals sounded just as good). You probably will want to set it up again after you buy it (factory set-ups are notoriously poor) and the fact that the new ones have a glued on "e" insignia means that it falls off after a few gigs, but those are the only negatives I can think of. You really can't go wrong with this well made, versatile instrument.
