EPIPHONE EB-3 SG BassIn the early 1960s the Kalamazoo factory, home to both Epiphone and Gibson instruments, decided to cease production of the Les Paul guitar. In its place came a radical new guitar design that also influenced the Kalamazoo factory's bass designs. With the Les Paul (temporarily) out of the picture, the SG took over. And for a time during that golden era of manufacturing, the classic SG bass was the historic factory’s sole electric bass. But the EB “SG” bass was by no means a cast-off. It quickly became one of the most attractive and distinctive basses in rock and players like Bill Wyman of The Rolling Stones, Cream’s Jack Bruce, and The Who’s John Entwistle made rock history on SG-style basses. Now, Epiphone presents the EB-3, a stunning recreation of the vintage marvel with all the tone and feel of the original without the vintage price tag and vintage problems.

I love this bass! I have tried many different basses over the years and have never found one that I would trade the EB-3 for. There's been a few that I wouldn't mind adding to the collection but you can't beat the feel of the Epiphone. I have tried Fenders, Washburns, Trabens and even the Gibson SG reissue (which was close, but I prefer the 34" scale and the $1000 difference in price.) I have heard others say that the EB-3 is a great bass for the price - well I just think it's a great bass.
One of my first basses was a Gibson EB-3. Unfortunately, back in the late 60's, none of my amplifiers or speakers allowed for the full tonal spectrum for this bass to really sparkle as it should have.
The EB3 I purchased from WWBW was delivered and it only needed a slight neck adjustment and raising the bridge pick up to suit my taste. WARNING: You will never realize all of the tonal beauty of this bass through an entry level practice amp. (You should have a good amp for this bass to strut its stuff). I opened up all tones and volumes to full throttle on the bass. I ran my AMPEG 4 Pro or Hartke 410 combo amp with the low end eq flat. With the highs almost maxed, I set the bass selector switch on 2 engaging both pick ups and was amazed to see what was missing with my Fender Basses all of these years. If I want to cut back the lows I simply lower the volume on the neck pick up. The punch and depth on this setting alone with the beautiful action and playability of the neck makes this very versatile, not just for Jack Bruce Bass.
