This is a beautiful sounding horn! It is most definitely worth the price. If I were you, I would buy this horn. I would get a new neck strap though. It is not comfy, and my saxophone fell off. I caught it, though. I will also recommend grease for putting the gooseneck on the horn. It has a beautifully designed bell.
We were tired of renting a sax @ $50+ per month for my son to play in school. I found this one for a little more than the current price and we returned the rental unit. We have been happy with it, the quality is very similar to the one we rented and my son has been happy with it.
I purchased this Etude 3 months ago from The Woodwind & Brasswind Company after thorough research & reviews for my 11 year old just starting out with the Alto Saxophone. I can say this without hesitation, this is the best value that you can find anywhere for a high quality instrument. Even the music teacher at my son's school was impressed with the quality & most importantly the sound. She couldn't believe what we paid for it....especially hearing & seeing the quality compared to the higher priced Sax's. Prior to makeing this purchase I called and spoke with a very helpful & knowledgable representative as I was very skeptical of the quality because of the low price. The representative was very patient with me as this was a first time purchase on a brass instrument and I didn't want to make any mistakes. My son is very proud of his new saxophone and when my other son is ready to purchase (whatever instrument he decides to play) an instrument rest assured that my first contact will be with The Windwood & Brasswind Company...they are awesome to do business with!
This sax is an excellent beginners instrument although it looks like a professional instrument and sounds great! Best of all, is the delivery was swift and the price affortable. Its a splendered product for the price. Top quality and all assessories come with the purchase. Donot miss the opportunity to own one.
This is a good saxophone for a beginner CHILD student ONLY. If the child will be going on to marching band later on in school, it wouldn't work for marching band. The hole for the lyre is round and the lyre is square, so it wouldn't fit.
I was pleasantly surprised by this sax except for the following:
There was no music stand as described by one of the reviewers;
I needed a pliers to remove the neck plug.
The low G is unreliable. The middle range C# is flat.
The octave key is tricky:; an unpredictable hair trigger or nonresponsive. I hope to adapt. Am unable to access high C or D.
As I have trouble playing the higher notes,
I thought the black plastic left thumb rest button was an octave key protective cover, but on looking at the photos realize it is the left thumb rest after all. Have managed to get a high F and E so don't understand why no high C and D.
I cannot reach the lowest left side key! It is much further down than on my primary alto.
Also the neck is a big rough inside when I brush it out
However the tone, when I can get the note, sounds better than I expected, except for an occasional rattle and shaky sometimes nonresponsive low G and occasional nonresponsiveness of other notes. I'm hoping that perhaps these will work out or that customer support will contact me. (after 3 calls 3 days ago). I look forward to speaking with a sax specialist at WWBW.
I do appreciate the lighter weight including case, which makes this sax more portable than my basic one. I'm wanting to use this backup as a mobile if I can just get it to play!
As I've never had a new sax, I am really hoping that I can "break it in" by playing it (although I can't really play without the high notes and the G).
Bottom Line: I really want this to work for me.
Despite all the above, it is really a sweet little horn!
We bought this saxophone for my 11 year old son in April 2011 as a first instrument as it had such great reviews. He has enjoyed playing it and all seemed fine until now. One year later, we are experiencing the problem of notes not playing. I have just taken it to a repair shop and was informed it had major manufacturer flaws. I was told eventually the metal is going to break because it was so thin and the cement is coming off. It was temporarily repaired but the problem will occur again and the condition of the instrument will worsen. To fix the flaws the repair cost quoted was $200! Clearly we are not going to pay half again to fix a low quality saxophone so will have to upgrade to a more expensive one. We are most disappointed to have purchased this instrument. My son is very careful and not the kind of child who would be careless - it appears this is just a low quality item. What a waste of money.
Was shopping for an inexpensive alto to compliment my tenor. Wow, was I surprised! Very nice tone, middle D not stuffy at all (unlike my tenor). Low notes just roll out effortlessly. I gig on weekends and needed a horn that didn't cost a down payment on a house. I can't compare this to high end saxes but for the money you won't beat it. Maybe I got lucky, but even my tech said, "Not bad", and he's very fussy. Try if for 45 days, I didn't send mine back.
I recently purchased this sax for marching band (as I own a Schagerl Amadeus Series alto sax for concert band), and I think for the price, the horn is wonderful. It has a generally good tone, and has a better tone than my Bundy II (which is about $800 new). The only "bad" part about the sax is the corks; there are no real corks (all rubber on the G# key and low Bb keys on the bell) except for the actual neck. These have fallen off from marching band. However with regular use the horn should be fine.
Overall I play on a 3.5/4 vandoren reeds (V12s usually), with an Al3 or C* mouthpiece and a vandoren optimum ligature. The tone quality is great, and the range of the sax is wonderful (I can hit altissimo D on this horn much easier than my nice sax). I was so shocked when I first played it and my tone was excellent (I have played on the Selmer Mark VI and the
series II; I do have a comparison point for tone).
Overall: PERFECT student horn. Amazing price, great tone, good response. The only thing I would say is a negative is that the little corks keeping the low Bb and G# are rubber and fall off (but this doesn't affect the music, it just makes a clanking sound when you play, and the keys stick out more; and it's easily fixable with glue). I don't know how Etude made a horn so cheap and such good quality!
We bought this instrument for my 5th grader who wanted to try band this year. After being floored at the cost of her schools rental program, I decided we needed to explore other options. I came across WWBW website and was excited about the price, but wary about the quality. We decided to try it out since we could return it if we needed to. First of all, WWBW was very easy to work with. They immediately sent me a confirmation email and then tracking numbers for the item within 24 hours. We ordered on a Friday afternoon and the instrument was on our doorstep by Tuesday. The packing was very well done and I felt the piece had been handled with care. We opened the instrument and it was perfect; bright, shiny, and felt of very high quality. My daughter quickly assembled the piece and was able to easily play a few notes. The notes were strong and sounded very rich. Of course we are NOT professional musicians in this house, and I read an earlier comment about how it was not professional quality, but we didn't hear or see anything wrong with it. We purchased the accessory pack with the music stand and everything was brand new. We also purchased the 3 year warranty, again, because she is in elementary band. I would highly recommend WWBW and this sax to anyone who is looking to encourage their child in music without breaking the bank. (Had I rented the sax from the school it would have cost us $2100.00!) For a beginning music student this is absolutely perfect and I am VERY impressed.
