I recently purchased this sax for marching band (as I own a Schagerl Amadeus Series alto sax for concert band), and I think for the price, the horn is wonderful. It has a generally good tone, and has a better tone than my Bundy II (which is about $800 new). The only "bad" part about the sax is the corks; there are no real corks (all rubber on the G# key and low Bb keys on the bell) except for the actual neck. These have fallen off from marching band. However with regular use the horn should be fine.
Overall I play on a 3.5/4 vandoren reeds (V12s usually), with an Al3 or C* mouthpiece and a vandoren optimum ligature. The tone quality is great, and the range of the sax is wonderful (I can hit altissimo D on this horn much easier than my nice sax). I was so shocked when I first played it and my tone was excellent (I have played on the Selmer Mark VI and the
series II; I do have a comparison point for tone).
Overall: PERFECT student horn. Amazing price, great tone, good response. The only thing I would say is a negative is that the little corks keeping the low Bb and G# are rubber and fall off (but this doesn't affect the music, it just makes a clanking sound when you play, and the keys stick out more; and it's easily fixable with glue). I don't know how Etude made a horn so cheap and such good quality!
I bought this for my son last year when he first entered band. I didn't want to spend a lot of money in the event that he chose not to like the band. The teacher had a nerve to call it cheap, but I proved her wrong with the number of high reviews on this product! This is his second year of band and the instrument is holding up well. I bought the warranty which will repair it should anything major happen to it. I refused to lease an instrument when I could purchase one for a fraction of the price. I recommend this brand of instrument to any one looking for quality savings!
Was shopping for an inexpensive alto to compliment my tenor. Wow, was I surprised! Very nice tone, middle D not stuffy at all (unlike my tenor). Low notes just roll out effortlessly. I gig on weekends and needed a horn that didn't cost a down payment on a house. I can't compare this to high end saxes but for the money you won't beat it. Maybe I got lucky, but even my tech said, "Not bad", and he's very fussy. Try if for 45 days, I didn't send mine back.
We bought this saxophone for my 11 year old son in April 2011 as a first instrument as it had such great reviews. He has enjoyed playing it and all seemed fine until now. One year later, we are experiencing the problem of notes not playing. I have just taken it to a repair shop and was informed it had major manufacturer flaws. I was told eventually the metal is going to break because it was so thin and the cement is coming off. It was temporarily repaired but the problem will occur again and the condition of the instrument will worsen. To fix the flaws the repair cost quoted was $200! Clearly we are not going to pay half again to fix a low quality saxophone so will have to upgrade to a more expensive one. We are most disappointed to have purchased this instrument. My son is very careful and not the kind of child who would be careless - it appears this is just a low quality item. What a waste of money.
We bought this instrument for my 5th grader who wanted to try band this year. After being floored at the cost of her schools rental program, I decided we needed to explore other options. I came across WWBW website and was excited about the price, but wary about the quality. We decided to try it out since we could return it if we needed to. First of all, WWBW was very easy to work with. They immediately sent me a confirmation email and then tracking numbers for the item within 24 hours. We ordered on a Friday afternoon and the instrument was on our doorstep by Tuesday. The packing was very well done and I felt the piece had been handled with care. We opened the instrument and it was perfect; bright, shiny, and felt of very high quality. My daughter quickly assembled the piece and was able to easily play a few notes. The notes were strong and sounded very rich. Of course we are NOT professional musicians in this house, and I read an earlier comment about how it was not professional quality, but we didn't hear or see anything wrong with it. We purchased the accessory pack with the music stand and everything was brand new. We also purchased the 3 year warranty, again, because she is in elementary band. I would highly recommend WWBW and this sax to anyone who is looking to encourage their child in music without breaking the bank. (Had I rented the sax from the school it would have cost us $2100.00!) For a beginning music student this is absolutely perfect and I am VERY impressed.
I purchased this product just a few days ago and received it yesterday, it is beautiful! It is of very high quality and definitely worth the money. If you are thinking about purchasing this product, DO, I am so glad that I was able to find this saxophone online, plus it had free shipping so for a very low price, I am so glad I chose to buy this!
I bought this for my daughter last Sept for her birthday as a starter sax. Since purchasing it, we've had it in the shop a number of times to tighten keys and readjust this or that. The sound is ok. I bought it so she could use it in marching band and/or jazz band in school. I should have spent a little more & bought a name brand instrument.
bought this for my 12 year old grand daughter. beautiful looking with a nice sound. she said its easier to blow than the one from school that was 4 x the price
came with a good case and strap. for a treat I bought her the jazz strap and she loved it.If it lasts 2 or 3 years we got our money's worth. if she wants to keep playing we will consider a step up then.It shipped to Canada in a week. Pleased with the sax and pleased with quick delivery.
I bought this for my 12 year old son for his first year in band. We got it today and let me tell you it is BEAUTIFUL. I almost want to learn to play it myself. The sound is awesome and he is in love. It hasnt even been here 24 hours and he has told everyone and showed the pictures of him with it. I ordered it on Sunday and got it on Wednesday. I love the service and the speedy delivery. I cant wait to hear my son play this when he learns the notes. I recommend you buy this Sax. You wont regret it.
I was really impressed when I received the instrument. I bought it for my Grand Nephew to finish out his Senior year in H.S. I am a professional musician for over 50 years and I am also a retired USAF Bandsmen.
The sax is in a very sturdy case that will take a lot of abuse. I played on the horn in it's full range and everything was very nice. I wasn't impressed with the mouthpiece and if the player is an intermediate musician I suggest another mouthpiece. Consult your teacher. The intonation was very good as was it's tone. There is no marching lira with it but those are cheap. You do get a very nice music stand with it in the accessory pack.
A plus is the adjustment on the articulated G#. This is a feature found only on very expensive horns. The only bad thing was a mis-adjustment on the Articulated B flat Bis key (B flat 1 and 4 fingering) A beginner is highly unlikely to use this fingering and it will not be a problem. This is a minor adjustment!!! and may have only been on this horn. Most shops wouldn't charge much to do it and maybe even nothing at all. The finish is really nice.
There is very adequate guarding on the lower keys and also a guard for the longer keys and rods.
I could find no serious fault with this instrument and the price is incredible. The pro musician might consider the Etude as a backup horn
