Evans EMAD Clear Batter HeadThe Evans EMAD Clear Batter Drumhead comes with 2 damping rings, each of which affects the head's sound and pedal response. EMAD stands for Externally Mounted Adjustable Damping and this external system maximizes natural attack characteristics. It offers tremendous dynamic range (even at low dynamic levels where other systems fall short). The Evans drumhead also allows quick, easy adjustments without having to remove the head from the drum—an especially valuable feature during recording sessions. Evans EMAD bass drumheads come in 18", 20", 22", and 24" sizes.

When I first read about this head, I was a little bit apprehensive. Adjustable Dampening? I had never heard of it before, and I was a tad skeptical. But the minute I put that head on my 22" Pearl Export Bass Drum, I absolutely fell in love with the sound. I loved how it was punchy and deep, with warm tones, but it was also concise and focused, with a powerful attack, and reduced resonance, but enough to give it guts. I have been using this head for almost 3 years now, and I absolutely love how it sounds. I would recommend this head to anyone.
I've been playing drums a long while and it's always been a challenge to muffle the overtones of the kick drum without muffling the punch. I was told about this head recently, so I thought I would give it a try. My 24" 70's Ludwig never sounded so good. It sounds "big" (like a 24 should) with a full bottom punch. I used the larger of the two muffles and the sound is great. I recommend this head to anyone that wants a big sound with no "ring". Great job Evans!
Although I'm usually a real Remo aficionado, I have to admit what works, works. Evans has really made the better mousetrap as regards the bass drum batter head and I don't know how you could get a better sound. I myself like a low thump with some resonance, so this head with the wide muffling ring does it all. Put one of the EQ or PS3 type heads up front for more muffling, and you'd have all the thump in the world. My BD wears a smooth Ambassador logo head with no muffling, and I'm a happy camper. One thing about this head a little diferent than most is that IMHO, it likes to be tuned a little tighter than most others; it seems to give a better tone to the drum that way. Buy with confidence as Evans makes good stuff!
