The Fender FV-1 was the first electric violin I owned, but not the first one I played. I had played plenty of other electric violins, but none of them really caught my attention (except the ones I couldn't afford). Finally, I found this violin. I fell in love with it. It may be heavy, but after a day or two, you get used to it. The design and style make it really sharp and it instantly drew everyone's attention to the violin section of the orchestra I play in. Without the amp, it may sound a little odd, but you can still tell when it's in tune or not. Just like with the weight, it takes time to get used to it. However, when hooked up to an amp, it sounds wonderful. It actually sounds better than some of the electric guitars that my band uses.

Right off the bat you will notice the heaviness of this violin. Violins by nature are meant to be light enough to be held without help from your left hand. I did not get that from this violin. Without realizing i was holding most of the violin's weight with my left hand, making difficult passages almost impossible to play. The sound is raw, which is to be expected with ANY electric instrument. It is not designed to be played straight into a PA or headphones. Buy a preamp, some effect pedals, and even an acoustic amplifier to hear how the instrument is SUPPOSED to be heard. All in all, the sound is decent. It looks AMAZING, but it is constructed in a manner that hinders proper violin playing. OVERALL: Save up some more $$$ and get a Yamaha or a zeta.

The fender fv1 was the first violin I owned. I think the tone and feel of this instrument is great for the price. If you are planning to play it with out an amp I would not reccomend it because it doesn't sound to hot acoustically. otherwise this is a very good buy. The bow that comes with it is not so hot, so I would plan on buying a new bow with it.
