these reeds give consistent great projection and sound compared to cane reeds. I have saved a lot of money using these reeds compared to buying a box of cane reeds and throwing most of them away.
After preaching against "synthetic" reeds for years, I am now sold on Fibercell Reeds for my Baritone. I play a #2 Fibercell reed on a Ponzel Custom Mouthpiece with a YBS62 Yamaha sax. I have been unable to tell any NEGLIGIBLE difference VS Cane reeds, matter of fact the only difference is the consistency of the Fibercell over the cane. The reed performs well in all registers and is particularly vibrant in the low register. They play almost forever!! Which makes them cheaper in the long run.
I've been playing these reeds for about a year now. I play a 2.5 with a #6 Brilhart LevelAire (modern), Rovner Ligature, on my 1920s Conn stencil. After several years of fooling around with cane reeds, I found this is kind of an ultimate setup for my horn and style. I get the loud, slightly buzzy sound I'm looking for right out of the box. I find myself playing the same reed for weeks, even months at a time. I know you're supposed to rotate them, but I don't even bother.
After getting fed up with the very picky nature of my Berg Larsen bari mouthpiece, I decided it was time for a change. Out of habit, I had been playing Vandorens on it for about year. Eventually, however, I realized they weren't working on this particular mouthpiece. I decided to go reed hunting and tested out several different brands and types. Now, obviously, the results will vary depending on what mouthpiece you have, but for a stubborn Berg Larsen metal bari mouthpiece, Fibracell synthetic reeds are by far the best. I get excellent projection and MAGNIFICIENT range with these reeds. On my vandorens, there were several notes that came out really foggy, airy, or just plain weak. There are NO weak notes with a Fibracell. The low notes are rich and smooth, and the high notes are clear and precise. It's so much easier to play soft and still maintain a good tone. The difference is amazing. Although this is a true, "results may vary" situation, if you're looking for a versatile reed for a stubborn mouthpiece, Fibracell synthetics are definitely the way to go.
Switch saxes quickly without worry, these reeds don't dry out. Always consistent in strenght right out of the box. They last a LONG time, too, but will eventually just get a little too soft. They also look like regular reeds. I've played on them for at least the past 14 years. Love them!
