Fibracell Synthetic Bass Clarinet ReedThey have brilliant overtones for a full, resonant tone, a quick response for better articulation, and excellent pitch stability and intonation, even for clarinet. Best of all, they have the same woody tone as cane but with better projection. Fibracell reeds even have the same weight and stiffness as cane (cane floats and so does Fibracell!) but they last up to 4 times longer with no unplayable reeds and aren't affected by heat or humidity. With their high strength and long-lasting durability, they're less likely to give out on you in the middle of a performance, too. What is Fibracell?Fibracell is a sophisticated composite of aerospace materials designed to exactly duplicate the way nature constructs the cane that goes into the very best cane reeds. Very stiff but sound-absorbing Kevlar fibers are suspended in a lightweight rosin using extremely exacting production standards. Each reed is precisely machined and trimmed for a consistently perfect shape, so you get the same reed time and time again.

I first tried this reed on a recommendation from another Bass Clarinet/Utility player. I was looking for a reed that would be ready to play at any point in a concert without wetting it first. I was amazed at the instant "playability" and free response. I also love the true sound of the tone - I get compliments on my rich and full woodwind sound from other clarinet players. Fibracell is now the only reed I use for Bass Clarinet. I highly recommend this reed for the Bass!
Pros:Great sound. Clear and easy to hear. Good range. Cons: Sound will stop completely if not warmed up. I love the clean, clear sound of this reed on the bass clarinet. However, I noticed that it would sometimes stop working completely. I used a 2 1/2 Fibercell reed with a Pourtnoy mouthpiece. I tried a stock Leblanc mpc but had the same problem. I tried the usual tricks like varying embrochure pressure and moving the reed and ligature but no fix. Then I found that I was trying to play it too loud too soon. If I warmed the reed up with some soft playing for a few minutes it worked perfectly with a good range. Now I am happy.
I've always had trouble keeping my reeds wet not only when doubling but every time I played. It always seemed like that big reed would even go dry in my mouth while I was playing. I have tried other synthetic reeds but keep coming back to the Fibracell. I don't have to do a lot of adjusting; it plays well for me right out of the box, and I like its rich tone. they're very durable too. Mind will tend to wear thin right below the tip but I get lots of good playing out of them before they get to that stage.
I have been playing the Bass Clarinet for 7 years now. I have tried hundreds of different reeds... all of them fall short to this one. The fibracell is extremely responsive and enables the player to use it for any style of music. It is also EXTREMELY loud when necessary, so it works great for those who march in HS band. This reed has that added punch, especially in the middle octave, which is something marching Bass Clar's constantly look for. I still own my first fibracell, and it has lasted one full year for me. (Including Marching Band, Concert Band, and Pit Orchestra) Just buy one, at least a half size stronger than your typical Vandoren, and play around with it. I guarantee you will love it within days! In case it helps, I use a Selmer C* and a 4 ? size fibracell. I find that this is very easy to play on once you get used to the way these reeds work. If you are accustomed to a cane 2 ? or 3, don?t try anything stronger than a 3 ? to begin with. Good luck!
