I am just starting on the bass, but for the things that I use this bass for it gets the job done. The strings on the bass I think could be better and when I get the cash I will change them. For a starter bass I would say go with this one over any other bass at its price range.
Do not buy this bass! I'm a string teacher and thought that this would be a good deal and I could stock up on double basses. The school purchased five. The body itself is not great, but of the quality one would expect for the price. The peg gears are cheap and rattle when played. These basses are not set up by professional luthiers. The bridges have not been fitted or adjusted. This leads to the G and E strings being too low to the fingerboard and buzzing or not sounding at all when played in the higher positions. Keep in mind even beginners will shift to the third position early in their instruction. If they would have come with adjustable bridges, this could easily be corrected. New bass bridges costs over one hundred dollars (adjustable). The bows lose their ability to tighten fairly soon also. Do yourself a favor and spend the extra money for a quality instrument.
Firstly, the online description of this bass should mention that its going to need to have the soundpost and bridge installed. If it does say that, I must have missed it. More importantly, the quality of this bass is absolutely disgusting. I know you get what you pay for, but the 'instrument' is made so badly its not even playable. The fingerboard radius is angled on one side of the board, and the other side is nearly flat, its difficult to explain, but I have no clue how this got past whatever quality control they are using. Made in China. Thanks
I purchased the 1/2 size bass since I am a small adult. I am very pleased with it. I took it to the repair shop immediately for professional set up and as stated in some of the reviews, the bass needed work but not much. The fingerboard had to be planed because the strings would have buzzed otherwise. The bridge needed to be shaved down and grooved. The nut was actually fine. However, I am planning to play classical music for a while so the action should be a little higher for my style of music. The sound post was secure. The strings are fine, the bow is fine but the rosin is very cheap, the gig bag is ok. The repairs cost me $120 total. I really think this was a good purchase because a decent 1/2 size student bass costs around $1,250-$1,500, this cost me much less. I just didn't see why I should spend $1000 on an instrument that I am merely learning to play. I looked into renting but by the time I paid the deposit and rent it was 1/2 the price of this bass. So I think this is perfect for a student. If I decide to try and get professional work I will upgrade to a more expensive bass but this is fine for now. I would recommend this bass, just get it professionally set up and it shouldn't cost more than $150 -$250 for the set up. In fact, you should plan on spending an extra $250 on almost any bass you purchase online. Again, this is a very good deal, it's a fine bass for a beginner.
The good news is, I am not one. I wasn't going to pay over a grand for an instrument I was just going to fool around with, maybe play at jam sessions and the occasional guitar mass. It needs SERIOUS set up. The nut is notched, but barley. It is unplayable out of the box. I was expecting this and I am looking forward to adjusting it to my specs. What I wasn't expecting was the end pin socket being drilled at an angle. I am really surprised this passed inspection...even for China, this is bad. There are solutions to this, but I am expecting a stern lecture from a luthier about buying inexpensive imported instruments instead of buying the stuff he has in stock...which maybe better but will also set me back 1,500. I am either going to find a solution or take it to a pro and accept the finger wag. On the upside, I wanted a cheap bass and I enjoy tinkering around with instrument set up, so this will provide me with a week or so of fun and once it's set up I have no reason to doubt that this instrument will give me many years of pleasure...If it cracks, I'll glue it. It will give it character! I am replacing the strings with slaphappys, and the stock bridge looks fine but it is a little low and I am gonna give it a little lift with some spare maple I have. It has quirks, and I am not happy with the end pin, but that probably isn't the case with all of them, just mine. If you want a bass shaped instrument and don't want to plunk down a bunch of cash AND you have the time to tinker with it (contrary to popular belief, anyone can do simple set up work, it just takes time and patience) This may be a good buy, but that can be said about any of the many Chinese basses. If you are a student go with a better bass, you'll be a better player for it and you can look down on weirdos like me who play cheap instruments. These opinions do not reflect woodwind & brasswind or their sister company musician's friend (where from I ordered mine) They are GREAT people to deal with and I always shop with them first, as should you....just not this bass.
