Forestone Synthetic Alto Saxophone ReedForestone is a new synthetic reed from Japan that has most of the advantages of cane but none of the drawbacks. It is the ideal choice for clarinet and saxophone players at all skill levels who seek to free themselves from the problems of inconsistency and instability associated with cane reeds. Forestone reeds are made with a special material that contains wood fiber, more than 50 percent of which is actual bamboo. The result is a clarinet or saxophone reed that not only sounds and feels like a good cane reed, but looks like one too. Forestone reeds have a robust timbre that is clear and strong, with just enough buzz in the sound to ensure good projection and carrying power. Intonation is stable and the reeds articulate well from the lowest to the highest registers. Forestone reeds were developed in Japan over a 30-year period. Intensive research into appropriate materials and a new fabrication method for this type of product - injection molding - has resulted in the finest synthetic reed on the market.

I've had a F3 reed for the majority of this year, and I have to say that when I first tried it out I was both pleasantly surprised and very excited. This brand is awesome! It's a shame no one else has reviewed this yet, because it's actually what it says it to be: a cane reed with none of the drawbacks. It plays well, feels great, and you don't have to wait for it to moisten in order to blow a few good notes. This reed helps with keeping your airflow free-blowing pretty much every single time you use it. Even after playing on mine for nine months, it's still in pretty good shape, not to mention it still retains a good timbre and tone. I've tried it on a Meyer HR 5, Beechler Belite metal moutpiece, and Vandoren Optimum AL4, and the Forestone helped bring out the best in each. It seems a little expensive for just one reed, but comparing it to the boxes and brands of reeds I've gone through in the past, the price is nothing. After going through at least five boxes of cane reeds in a span of six months to find a good reed (only to have it warp/split/wear down too quickly), this was a very welcome change. I even experimented with a few other synthetic reed brands when trying to save money, but never really got a satisfying tone quality from them, nor did they feel as natural as the Forestone reed. For those of you looking for an alternative to cane but not wanting anything "too synthetic", this would be an excellent choice. It's worth a try, even if you might be skeptical about it at first like I was.
