Forestone Synthetic Baritone Saxophone ReedForestone is a new synthetic reed from Japan that has most of the advantages of cane but none of the drawbacks. It is the ideal choice for clarinet and saxophone players at all skill levels who seek to free themselves from the problems of inconsistency and instability associated with cane reeds. Forestone reeds are made with a special material that contains wood fiber, more than 50 percent of which is actual bamboo. The result is a clarinet or saxophone reed that not only sounds and feels like a good cane reed, but looks like one too. Forestone reeds have a robust timbre that is clear and strong, with just enough buzz in the sound to ensure good projection and carrying power. Intonation is stable and the reeds articulate well from the lowest to the highest registers. Forestone reeds were developed in Japan over a 30-year period. Intensive research into appropriate materials and a new fabrication method for this type of product - injection molding - has resulted in the finest synthetic reed on the market.

I purchased one of these in 2.5 strength for my high school bari sax player. It has excellent response, especially on the low A. I have been using the Legere reeds for all of my low woodwinds, as they are more stable and last longer than real reeds, but these seem to offer some advantage. I wish they made them for bass clarinet and contrabass clarinet.
I've been playing on Forestone Synthetic for about 3 years. I ordered them direct from forestone when they were first released. 2 Reeds last me a year playing on average 3 nights a week (6-7hours a week.) Buy them a whole number harder than you normally play with a traditional cane reed. You can adjust and shave the heart just like a cane reed to get them in the spot you want. They aren't perfect you lose a little over cane, but they are extremely stable, shavable, and take a lot of aggressive hard playing with the ability to come right into subtone without any issues.
My setup is a Rousseau JDX7 with a Forestone 4.5.
I tried a forestone 5 they are made to be shaved. It's almost like buying a reed blank. You cannot get a sound from them unless you were playing a #2 tipped mouthpiece. I spent a half hour messing with a 5 to get it to play perfect. Made me feel like an oboe player. But they can be made to work.
