Fox Renard Bassoon ReedThis Fox reed is an excellent choice for double reed players.

I have bought these in the past and considered them the best off-the-shelf reed available. I just bought 6 of these and they are way too soft. They were only available in Medium so I assumed that was what I had previously bought. Looking at my Jan 2008 catalog, they had them also in Med Hard (and Med Soft). Maybe that was what I bought before. The Medium reed is very soft and even with extreme wire adjustments is unstable and out of tune - best used as a duck call.
I recently bought two of these reeds along with many others, and out of all different brands, this disappointed me the most. One of the reeds needed the wires to be tightened A LOT just for a decent tone to come out of it. The other reed looked as though it was not trimmed or clipped at all before being shipped, being a good centimeter longer than all my other reeds. It also needed the wires tightened after it was cut, but still did not produce a good sound.
After reading the reviews about this reed and others, I decided to get this reed for its playabilty and value. I ordered 4 of these reeds. My problem with these reeds are that they are inconsistent. One of the reeds was thin and didn't flare out like a triangle at the top, it was like an oboe reed. Another reed wasn't semetrical on its sides and one piece of reed was cut of the edge of the reed. This is most certainly due to poor-machine work. All and all, only one of the reeds was acceptable. Now don't get me wrong, these reeds are still worth it for practicing and for the value; but don't set your expectations too high like I did and end up getting disapointed. Although Fox is a wonderful brand for doublereeded instraments, they are not for the reeds themselves. The one thing you should get out of this review is that if you are looking for a consistent reed you will not find it here.
Good quality packaging for a really horrid reed. It looked like it was put together by faulty machinery. It was not cut properly and was lopsided from having a corner completely sheared. It also had loose wires. Even if I had the tools, I think the poor quality metal would have broken in an attempt to fix it, and the sheared edge was unrepairable.
WWBW is shipping a replacement for free, so I hope it a decent reed this time.
I recommend Gower if you like a soft reed or Philharmonic if you want a thick reed.
I am a fan of Fox bassoons all the way. I would never buy anything different. HOWEVER, the reeds are terrible. Some can be salvaged (and others can't) if you have the patients, but in that time you might as well make your own reed. I personally think the biggest problem with them is the fact that there is not enough "reed" there! They are thin and short, bad wires, and loose threads. I have had my fair share of them and know their playability. The best store bought reed is definitely Jones. However, my advice is look around and find some professional made reeds. Contact a local Symphony member. Much better than anything bought that is mass produced.
