Fox Renard Bassoon ReedThis Fox reed is an excellent choice for double reed players.
Order today with the no-risk assurance of our Total Satisfaction and Low Price Guarantees!
Stop looking and put this one in your cart. You won't find a better factory-made bassoon reed for this price -- comparable reeds sell for $15 or more. Forget Jones and Rico and Vandoren and other over-priced reeds and buy the Fox reed, especially if you play a Fox bassoon. I make my own reeds, but I'd use this one in a pinch. Make sure you have a good case to keep reeds in, like the Fox case, so they don't mildew or crack. BAND DIRECTORS: This is the reed to buy for your bassoon students -- they will play better immediately.
I was a little bit skeptical a factory made would be good. However, when I tried it out of the tube, it kind of disappointed me a little bit. It gave me a thin and buzzing sound though it was easier to play on the lower and middle range notes but very thin on the high register. Luckily for me I'm able to adjust, so I just sliced off a little bit of the tip and there you go! An excellent reed! It's not too wide nor too big for me and it plays with a good tone now. I'm glad my bulk orders would not be wasted as there are no good commercial reeds I can use now ever since Rico and Jones stop selling. I would recommend anyone to use it, of course with a little bit of adjustment it would go a long long way. The best thing about it is that, every reed has the same cut where other companies would have different variations in terms of looks, feel and what not to their reeds. Had a fox bocal and reed from WWBW. I would like to thank you guys again for the excellent service and products!!!
Good quality packaging for a really horrid reed. It looked like it was put together by faulty machinery. It was not cut properly and was lopsided from having a corner completely sheared. It also had loose wires. Even if I had the tools, I think the poor quality metal would have broken in an attempt to fix it, and the sheared edge was unrepairable. WWBW is shipping a replacement for free, so I hope it a decent reed this time. I recommend Gower if you like a soft reed or Philharmonic if you want a thick reed.
I recently bought two of these reeds along with many others, and out of all different brands, this disappointed me the most. One of the reeds needed the wires to be tightened A LOT just for a decent tone to come out of it. The other reed looked as though it was not trimmed or clipped at all before being shipped, being a good centimeter longer than all my other reeds. It also needed the wires tightened after it was cut, but still did not produce a good sound.
After reading the reviews about this reed and others, I decided to get this reed for its playabilty and value. I ordered 4 of these reeds. My problem with these reeds are that they are inconsistent. One of the reeds was thin and didn't flare out like a triangle at the top, it was like an oboe reed. Another reed wasn't semetrical on its sides and one piece of reed was cut of the edge of the reed. This is most certainly due to poor-machine work. All and all, only one of the reeds was acceptable. Now don't get me wrong, these reeds are still worth it for practicing and for the value; but don't set your expectations too high like I did and end up getting disapointed. Although Fox is a wonderful brand for doublereeded instraments, they are not for the reeds themselves. The one thing you should get out of this review is that if you are looking for a consistent reed you will not find it here.
