I really like the Hemke reeds. They don't need break-in time and have a nice, classical mellow sound. I did find that I preferred a reed one degree firmer than I used in other brands. Definitely well worth buying.
Outstanding performance playing classical on Keilwerth straight alto with Morgan 3C (0.062") and Rovner 1RL (pins/thumbscrew on top left contrary to Rovner's guidance, tightened rather firmly). Performs well with the Vandoren AL3/AL4. Considerably better tone and character than Vandoren Traditional. Cathedral-chambered Selmer mpcs unusable on KWs (go flat as one goes up).
I use Hemke 2 1/2 reeds on a vintage Meliphone mp.This setup gives me a large and warm sound. I had been using Rico Royal 2 1/2 reeds but as my embouchure improved (I've been playing about two years, this time around.) They were too soft and also the quality was not consistent. I tried RR 3 but that was stiff for me and not comfortable to use. I was consulting a reed chart when I noticed that (at least on that chart) the Hemke 2 1/2 sat between the 2 1/2 and 3 of all the other brands on the chart. I tried a box and was quickly convinced. The hardness is still perfect for me after about a year of using them. I love the big dark sound I get with the reed. Perfect for the blues I play with my band but also very nice for the wind ensemble I play with. I feel the warm sound blends well with the sax section and the rest of the band. The quality has been very consistent. Almost no bad reeds out of the box. All have gotten used.
I was getting really sick of only finding 4 or 5 blue box vandorens that I like in a box of ten. That's when I tried Hemkes and I love them. They come out of the box largely ready to play and have a consistent good seal with the mouthpiece. I use a rico reed vitalizer and store my reeds in there, because otherwise the plastic reed case allows wet reeds to warp so easily. This is a great reed, I suggest it for anyone who wants a dark classical sound and an easy response.
As a sax player, I feel Hemke reeds are very versitile. I love the consisitency it provides throughout the entire register of the instrument. Also, I love these reeds because they compliment my playing style. I don't have to force anything. Thanks to Frederick-Hemke Reeds, I can relax & just 'play'.
