These reeds work absolutely great. I use them on a Beechler mouthpiece and they provide the perfect sound I've wanted. On a bright mouthpiece, they'll dampen the brightness and give a well balanced pitch that sounds amazing. Kenny G even uses these, (on all his saxes) and if you don't believe me go type 'mouthpiece info' and find Kenny Gorelick.
I got it as a "sample" to try, and one day, when I ran out of my other reeds, I decided to try it. I've found that it has a shorter breaking-in period than the reeds I used to use (Vandoren); instead of taking a week to break in, this reed only takes about 2-3 days. I've also noticed that I have a darker, richer sound with this reed, as well as faster response. Usually, the whole box is pretty good, but I've purchased a couple boxes with a few bad reeds in them. For me, the only problem with this reed is that it only comes in a box of 5.
I recently bought these reeds, and I now prefer them to the Vandoren V16 reeds I used to use. These reeds provide a clearer, beefier tone, and are very cheap too. I highly recommend these reeds to any jazz or concert saxophonist.
Maybe it's me, but it's been a hit-and-miss for me. Out of a box of 5, I would only find 2 or 3 good ones. The ones that don't play well are really terrible, but the ones that are great are excellent. Very responsive, allowed me to play my ideas freely. I would definitely recommend buying more than one box just to be on the safe side of not having any bad ones.
I was getting really sick of only finding 4 or 5 blue box vandorens that I like in a box of ten. That's when I tried Hemkes and I love them. They come out of the box largely ready to play and have a consistent good seal with the mouthpiece. I use a rico reed vitalizer and store my reeds in there, because otherwise the plastic reed case allows wet reeds to warp so easily. This is a great reed, I suggest it for anyone who wants a dark classical sound and an easy response.
