I recently found bought a Buffet Limite (an R13 body with German keywork, a great compromise for a non-pro) and wasn't happy with the response I got with my faithful 18-year-old Vandoren B45. I tried several mouthpieces, including Vandoren's M13, M13L, and M15. WWBW also suggested the Gennusa because it had a similar facing and tip opening at the same price point. After a week of playing on it and experimenting with reeds, ligatures, barrels, mouth position, tonguing technique, etc., I have been pleasantly surprised to find that I favor the sound and response of the Gennusa. The sound is smoother and more focused than the Vandoren?s, and the response in the upper clarion and the altissimo registers is far better. And the Vandorens tend to over blow a bit too easily for me around G5-C6, but the Gennusa always remains stable. The Gennusa's playing characteristics also seem to change less in response to varying humidity, which can be a real problem for wind players in the Midwest. This mouthpiece responds well with my trusty old Vandoren Masters Series ligature and with my Rovner leather ligature, which I occasionally use for a bit smoother texture. Be aware that you might need a reed strength of at least 3.5 Mitchell Laurie or 3 Vandoren.
I use a Gennusa GE** with moderately stiff reeds (3.5 - 3.75, depending on the brand), on both a Buffet and an SML "Marigaux" Bb, and find the response cleaner and faster than any of the Vandorens I was playing on. It has very lively highs in its tone, so I use a Rovner Light lig to tone it down just a bit. It's a nice, free-blowing, mouthpiece with a nice tone.
I switched to the Gennusa Excellente last February, and I couldn't be happier. After playing on a Kaspar for a few years, and then a Pyne, I was trying to find a mouthpiece that was a compromise between both of these mouthpieces. I found that my Kaspar had a lot of tone color, but was very difficult to control in extremes of dynamics and range. The Pyne I used recently provided much more control, but lacked tone color. The Gennusa is a definite compromise between both of these (rather pricey) mouthpieces. It provides tremendous evenness & continuity of tone across every register and extreme of dynamic, but does not sacrifice tone color. With my Buffet Tosca and my Gennusa mouthpiece, I have never been happier with my tone. I have found that Vandoren V12's work best with this mouthpiece. Each Gennusa is very different from the other, so it can take a while to find just the right one. But once you find it, you will find that it absolutely sings.
I've played on many mouthpieces, including a custom Bay duckbill. This Gennusa mouthpiece provides a nice, even tone and response through all of the registers on many clarinets. I still like the Pyne Sinfonia best for overall tone and response, but the Gennusa is a very close second. I would recommend this for clarinetists who prefer using a stronger reed.
