Getzen 1052FD Eterna Series Bass TromboneMusicians who make their living playing bass trombones are well aware of the new Getzen Eterna 1052FD trombone. From symphony to swing to school concert bands, the Getzen Eterna Bass Trombones are a workhorse of the professional brass player. The 1052FD, played by many professional bass trombonists and often seen in school bands and orchestras, features an independent rotor system where players are able to access each rotor attachment individually. It has an amazingly efficient dual gauge bell that gives it great projection. The special design of the valve system allows the player to access the second (Gb) rotor without playing through the F. This allows the player several ways to simplify slide positions in the low range. The three interchangeable mouthpipes give the player the added advantage of being able to tailor the response of the instrument from the large bore tenor feel of the number one pipe, to the blending characteristics of the second, to the wide open sound of the third. All of these features are amplified by an amazingly efficient, dual gauge bell which is both powerful and beautiful sounding in all registers. It features a.562" bore (with three interchangeable leadpipes), a rose brass tuning slide, hand-straightened nickel silver inside tubes (chrome plated with barrel shaped stockings), and yellow brass outside tubes with a nickel silver end crook and oversleeves. The bell is 9 ½", dual gauge yellow brass with unsoldered rim. It comes with a 1½G Trombone mouthpiece.Other attributes include an independent, open wrap F/Gb/D attachment, 2 rotary valves and Getzen's Gold Warranty.

I finally upgraded to a bass trombone, and after a LOT of research I bought the Getzen 1052FDR. After playing it my reaction was, and still is, "WOW!". I was surprised to find it easier to get into the high octave than I had originally thought, considering the bore size. The tone is gorgeous, and there isn't a weak note in the instrument (provided you have enough air). The low end is powerful right through the peddle notes. The slide is like butter, after several lube jobs. I noticed this same tendency in my friend's Getzen 725 tenor bone. Either the lube job doesn't stick extremely well to the inner slide, or it just takes several times to coat the whole surface. The slide still works great despite this quark. I haven't had a chance to truly see what this horn is capable of as far as volume is concerned, but it was surprisingly easy to control on quiet side. I can say this, it will definitely make itself known in band or orchestra (with a little effort). The stock mouthpiece is pretty good, but I'm going to be replacing it here soon to get a little better response from the peddle range. This is not a beginner instrument, but if you are looking for a bass trombone, this one is absolutely superb and it won't break the bank in the process.
This is a awesome Trombone. The only other trombone on the market is an edwards which is getzen's sister company. This horn allows you to put a massive load of air in the horn and produces a huge sound. Buy this horn and you will get your money worth more than one time!
I play this horn in school for everything from Wind Ensemble to Jazz to Chamber Ensmbles. I love this horn. It does get a little stuffy with the valves down but that's because of the rotors in stead of thayers. The stock mouthpiece is basically Getzen's version of the Bach 1 1/2. The case is a little big for the horn so there is movement in the bell section but it's really no big deal.
I must say that this is honestly one of the best bass trombones I have ever played. It has a warm mellow tone in general but with a little coaxing (and a Schilke 60) you can really make her growl. The rose brass bell is also the way to go, it really makes for a beautiful singing tone. Again, I really believe this to be an excellent horn for the money.
The horn is basically a non-interchangable off-the-shelf Edwards horn. Which is to say it's a pretty nice setup, if the stock horn matches your needs. Solid response throughout all registers. If you're used to a rose-brass bell, you may find yourself overblowing a bit, as yellow brass does not produce as mellow of a sound. This is a professional horn on a budget, not reccomended for beginners.
