I started out years ago with a Holton 181, moved to an old Conn 62H (the legend!), Edwards and recently downsized a little to the 1052. This is a great horn. Easy to play, light and agile with a great commercial sound. The rotors are quick and responsive. Perfect for big band and I wouldn't hesitate to play orchestra with it.
I finally received my 1062fdr and it is a pleasure to play. The slide is perfectly smooth and easy. Little notice of increased air resistance even with both valves depressed. Beautiful sound, even for me. Highly recommended, for anybody who has the pecuniary capability.
i have played the holton 181, king duo gravis, and edwards B454. they're all fantastic horns, but upon playing a 1062fdr, i noticed that it is very easy to blend (or bark) and can play very dark or very brassy. i was surprised at how well the horn slots through the f and d valves, especially when making jumps of more than an octave. overall, i would play this in any setting a bass trombone is desired
I bought a Getzen 1062FD in 2006. Before purchasing this horn, I tested a Conn, Bach, Yamaha and Olds. The Getzen had by far the best slide, was very similar in tone to the Conn and was considerably cheaper than both the Conn and Bach. My setup is lead pipe #2 on a Schilke 60 for big band and choral work and a Dennis Wick 2 for orchestral. With the right air, this horn has the power to stand out in any jazz band, yet tastefully with a full and rich tone. This truly is a fantastic horn!
I've played the 1062 since spring 2005. What a great horn! Plays very open and with a big symphonic sound. Excellent slide and great rotors. Don't let the "Semi-Professional" label fool you. This instrument is a tremendous bang for the buck. I personally bought it over the custom line horn brands when I was in Grad School. With $4500 to spend (trombones were a lot cheaper in 2005) I was able to consider a very comprehensive range of trombone brands. They simply weren't $2000+ better than the Getzen for me. We're all different, but I'm well satisfied with money I saved. I would recommend this instrument for anyone to try.
