I will NEVER play a brass mouthpiece again!
As the owner of SIX GW Tuba mouthpieces I think I can write with some authority.
In the local Community College Jazz Band this mouthpiece works great. It has a cutting edge, slightly brittle, that pierces and so the tuba tone is not lost in the harmonies and sound textures of the modern jazz band. Blends with trombones however it is a bit brittle for concert work. I play other mouthpieces for Band, Quintet, and Orchestra concerts.
I play a vintage MiraFone BBb 184 (a smaller horn of 1980 vintage; not a newer MiraPHone but I love them all). The horn was purchased new for me along with a Mirafone C4 mouthpiece. Also played this horn off and on with a Conn/Helleberg.
There was always something not quite right with the sound using either the C4 or the C/H mouthpiece, especially the C/H. Pitch issues, tone issues, range issues, endurance issues.
When I got my first G&W my range popped UP a full augmented 3rd. And the bottom range plays easier. Now the pitches slot and tone is improved. That's with all my G&W mouthpieces.
With my G&Ws I can not only compete for volume and tone with my smaller horn, but am easily heard. Oh, yeah. I'm first chair of three tubas since getting my G&W mouthpieces.
Lastly, Per Ivan Giddings of Giddings & Webster:
American or Standard Shank is SMALLER
European Shank is LARGER
