I play these reeds on tenor, I think they're real good stuff. I picked some up a couple months ago, 3 1/4, and I thought they were very consistent with a dark focused sound. They may have a slight tendency to warp at first (which can be fixed with a little sand paper) but after like 3 days they are very constant, and will play for a long time. I just bought a box of 3 1/2 and I'm still playing on the first reed after about 2 weeks (played right out of the box), which is pretty impressive by my standards (and it shows no sign of wearing out). I find they are a good match with my metal 7* Otto link mouthpiece, but I tend to play on a slightly more resistant setup.
If I have one complaint, it is that the low end might be slightly harder to play soft in than, say, a Vandoren v16, but at the same time I think they are slightly more stiff in general than v16s. Basically, I think the tonal quality of these reeds surpass all others I have come across.
The percentage of well-playing reeds per box is amazingly high when compared to Vandoren, whose reeds almost without fail require adjustment. The use of quarter sizes is also important to note. I love Gonzalez reeds and find that they are also extremely long lasting when properly rotated!
Really impressed with the quality of the Gonzales reeds. I have played many different reeds over the past 60 years and the Gonzales rate with the best of them . I have tried 4 0ut
of the box and none needed extra braking in.
I use a # 2 with an SJ8 rousseau mouthpiece and am delighted to find a reed I can stick to.
These reeds are amazing! I love how Gonzalez offers sizes in quarter steps. When i play on vandorens, 2 1/2 are a tad soft, and 3 are too stiff to play. My ideal sound comes from well broken in 3s that i played on my old student mouthpieces, but through time those eventually break and become uselss. However, the 2 3/4 are perfect! On the bonus side, the reeds provided a consistent tone, even up in the altissimo register. It did get characterstically shrill, but not as much as Vandorens do. Personally, i love these reeds and im hooked =]
These reeds make my sound bigger for my jazz playing. I really like being able to play loud and not sound screechy.
