I've been playing about a year and have been searching for the right reed. After trying Vandoren Rico Royale, Rico Reserve, MItchell-Lurie, (regular and premium), here's my verdict. The Gonzales 1. is consistent-hardly a dud in the bunch 2. has a quick response so you can tongue more efficiently 3. has a warm rich mellow tone to help develop a characteristic clarinet tone You don't have to fight with this reed-you can just make music. I'm thinking of trying the FOF version too. Superb!
I thought I would be getting a reed that would serve well as a performance reed. I was sadly mistaken. I could not even play halfway through a 2 hour band rehearsal with this reed. The tone quality starts out great at the beginning and then gradually declines in total reed quality.
As a former player trying to come back up to speed, I have tried a number of reed brands including Gonzalez FOF. For me these Gonzalez regular cut have worked best, even though they are less expensive. I played their 3-3/4 for a while and now am playing the 4s. They give me a lot of control over the sound. The only problem is that always one or two in the box are way too stiff. However, at this price I just throw away the ones I don't like.
These reeds have are firmer and have a warmer sound than any other reeds that I have tried. Mitchell Luries are reeds I use for jazz, but these Gonzaleses are great for classical.
