80%percent is respectable though not fantastic average in most arenas, but as far as sax reeds are concerned, that really is fantastic. Having played on just about everything including plastic, (speaking of bari and legere), I started using gonzalez on my both my alto and tenor about 5 years ago. I began with the 2.5s and lately have mellowed to the 2.25 on the tenor and remain with the 2.5s on my alto. This is the only brand where I have found every reed playable. Sure some are better than others and each one is a little different but I don't ever recall having to go straight from the box to the garbage with any of their reeds. I play basically a bebop inspired style. My heros are naturally Coltrane and Sonny. I'm also a big Brecker fan (RIP), love Joshua Redman and Kenny Garrett just to name a few. The reeds give me great control of all possible nuances I get from my MkIV. Lows are warm and wet, highs are mellow and sweet - these are everthing you want in a reed if you really love the saxophone
While the hunt for good reeds never seems to end, lately I've been quite please with the Gonzalez reeds. I play a Couf/Kurtzweil tenor, most often with an SR Tech metal mouthpiece, and have tried plenty of different reed brands. Previously I most often used Vandoren ZZs, but I find the Gonzalez to give a more focused sound, and consistently offer more out-of-the-box playability. Usually I play the 3.5s, but appreciate the flexibility of having a 3.25 hardness also.
These reeds are by far my favorites for legit-classical saxophone playing. Combined with my Rascher, Rovner EVO-5, and Barone "Vintage" tenor, these reeds make a very dark yet not muddy sound with a kind of big and wooden quality to it. Think James Houlik with a more sweet upper register. I absolutely love these reeds and best of all, every one of them played the same for me. I'm sticking with these, keep it up Gonzales and don't fail us.
These reeds are consistent. They give me a great dark and big sound, which is what I am looking for. The response is also great. I recommend giving these a try. The price is also relatively cheap.
I play tenor with a symphonic concert band and I also enjoy jazz. Every few months I search for better equipment - new mouthpiece, different reeds, new type of ligature. I've finally found a great combination and a sound I'm pretty happy with, especially for classical music. Rovner Versa ligature with an older Rousseau mouthpiece and Gonzalez reeds. The reeds are consistently playable, no duds in the box, durable when well cared for and I love the depth they add to my tone.
