I have tried many different brands of reeds and I find these the best I have ever tried. I bought them both in size three for alto and soprano. Alto had 9 out of 10 reeds that were good and soprano had the whole box that was good. I've tried Hemke, Vandoren, Alexander, Rico Royal, Plasticover (to name a few) and none of them had the tone I was looking for. Vandoren reeds had 1 good reed when I bought a box of 10! Of course the reed played great but it broke and I didn't want to spend more money for one good reed. I tried these reeds on all my mouthpieces and they sounded great. I know from now on I will never have to switch reeds again.
I started using LaVoz reeds over 20 years ago. I hadn't played much for about 7 years. When I started playing again about two years ago, I started finding that too many of the reeds in a box were not good. With the wonderful internet, I searched for something new. I recently tried my first box of Rico Grand Concert. I find good reeds more often. I have asthma so a good reed means a lot. I plan to continue to buy this kind of reed.
These reeds are great, they play consistently and are well-balanced, plus you get a nice warm sound with them.
These are the most consistent reeds I have ever played on. Right out of the box 9 of 10 play great. Once they go through my break in process they play wonderfuly for a long while.
This is a great reed for playing all styles of music. The center of the reed is a little thicker in the center than a regular rico or say a jazz reed, but not as thick as the blue box Vandoren. The tip spreads well on the mouthpiece. I can go from playing the Ibert Concertino change my mouthpiece and play lead in a big band. The strength of the reed will determine the style. Thinner for jazz, thicker for classical. I do like the jazz selects, but times are tough and budgets are tight so this is my all purpose reed. I play professionally and teach music all week so I am very happy that I can get just about every reed to play well for the proper application. I've tried just about every reed on the market. The mouthpiece and ligature is very important in your choice for your sound. The reed is the finishing touch. One last note- no two reeds play the same say out of #3 reed box. I may take my Lamberson and use it for the thinner ones, my Selmer for the ones that feel thicker in the center and have my old Brilhart for the average feeling reed. There are many variables in a reed, how its grown, cut, what part of the bamboo etc.....
