I have tried just about every type of reed I could get my hand on and this by far is the best. I played on various Vandorens from blue boxes to 56's to White and Black Masters, but this reed is the best hands down. I like you may be was very apprehensive about Rico reeds due to there reputation, but these reeds are in a class of there own. Every single reed in the box is a winner with no duds whatsoever unlike the about 4 bad reeds you find in a pack of vandorens. Also these are unique in the way there are double cut, where the right and the left side of the reed are cut separatly, which gives the reed a thicker heart, or the center of the reed that determins tone. This gives you an amazing tone that speaks easily in any register. You have to try this reed and when you do you wont switch back.
When I opened up the box,I immediately started soaking em for a few minutes and when I played them they were incredible! All reeds but 1 were perfect, living up to the claim of consistency. I hit notes I never were able to hit with ease. I also started to try them out in the upper altissimo register and to my expectancy I hit them with ease! Then I started working my way down the clario and chalumeu registers and I was rewarded with a rich, dark tone. These were MUCH better than the single V-12 and 56 I recently purchased. The ONLY problem with this is that they seem to lose their spunk after some minutes, and ultimately, some weeks. Despite that, i give this a 10/5! Rico has really outdone itself this time!
I play only Grand Concert Select reeds and they have been my preferred reeds for several years. They produce a full, rich tone over the full range of the instrument (Buffet R-13). Almost every reed plays well out of the box with no adjusting. If I take the time to properly break them in, they hold their strength longer. But if I don't get a chance to do a break in, I can pull one out of the box, soak it a bit and then play it directly with confidence that it will not let me down.
I always had troubles with Vandorens; they always seemed to give me this awkward shaking sound. They were hard to play with (thick), very inconsistent (everyone knows that about 2~3 reeds out of a box of Vandren works), and numerous other factors I forgot now (has been months ever since I played Vandorens). About two months ago, however, I began to play these reeds by my teacher's recommendations; and I still thank him for doing so. Unlike Vandorens, which gave me endless troubles, these reeds play really smoothly over all intervals, give notes easily (unlike CERTAIN other reeds), and are really consistent (about 7-9 useable reeds per box, as opposed to Vandorens, 3-5 reeds at most; I once had a box with no useable reed at all - that really made me frustrated). Not saying that Vandorens (stink), since all my other friends can play really well with Vandorens without throwing one away. I, however, would like to say that people who suffer with Vandoren might seriously consider these reeds.
