Been playing on a LT King for the past 5 yrs. or so. Got damaged during a gig, so I decided to try out the LT MBII model. Not a terrible mouthpiece, but not great either. Sounds excellent in the high and low range of the horn...altissimo pops right out, but mid range wasn't very good at all. Tried a variety of reeds, but no resonance at all in the mids - very stuffy sound. If the mids had a nice sound, this piece would be a keeper. It also looks mass produced - the finish had a few blemishes on it, and the plating inside the chamber was very rough. There were some very weird machine cuts inside the chamber also. Frankly, that would not have bothered me had the piece sounded good. Overall, comparing this to an older LT King model, the quality of the King is considerably better. I'll be sending this back, and trying a new LT King next.
This mouthpiece is wonderful. Tons of body with just the right amount of edge for big band and rock and roll gigs. Takes a good bit of practice to keep the chops steady, but is great once you practice and find the right reed. My only gripe is that WW&BW didn't include a working ligature with it. I use my Rovner meant for my HR soprano mouthpiece on it because the included ligature is a horrible Rovner knockoff. Great mouthpiece for a great price.
Could be a good piece but it is quite open. Puzzling that there are no tip sizing options. I guess they may envision a system with a very soft reed (2.5).
Once I played on this mouthpiece I will never go back. My first mouthpiece I ever used was a Otto Link and this mouthpiece is way beyond that. This gave me the tone that I have searched for forever. Amazing mouthpiece and I suggest everyone to give this a try.
I have been playing professionally for around 15 years from jazz quartet, to rocking bar cover band, to big band and everything along the way. I have played a Runyon 8 metal for the past ten years. It has served me VERY well. I still like the super high (Lenny Picket type) altissimo it provides in the right blues/funk settings. That having been said, my MBII arrived yesterday after a lengthy backorder and some fabulous customer service and I quickly went to work on the beauty. I play Rico 2.5 on the runyon 8 but its tip opening is about 15 thousandths less than the MBII. I sound good but was working pretty hard and had fuzzy tone down low and at low volumes. I bought some Rico 2.0 today and WOW! I have never had such clear lows and even tonal color throughout the entire range of my horn (Selmer series II no laquer). Altissimo is not as easy or clean as the runyon but the tonal center well more than makes up for it. I will get used to the MBII just like I did the runyon. This piece is not for the beginner. Be warned. But, with the right chops, it is well worth the money. Happy Playing.
