OVERVIEW

Perfect for Jazz, Rock, and Pop Playing!

The Harry Hartmann Carbon Series Fiberreeds use high-tech carbon fiber with hollow connecting fiber. The interweaving of the different fibers results in a very true feeling reed. The weave of the fibers is designed to emulate natural cane in ways that no other synthetic reed can. The Carbon fiberreeds reproduce the tendencies of natural cane to be very strong towards the outside (the bark) and more resonant yet not soft at the heart, while being very flexible at the vamp.

The result is a very full sound with direct response and a beaming upper register. The top choice of pop and jazz musicians.

FEATURES
  • Lasts 20-30 times longer than cane reeds
  • Play immediately, no soaking or break-in period
  • Extremely resistant to warping and splitting
  • Perfectly consistent
  • Never dries out
  • Easy to clean, resulting in a hygienic and odorless reed even after months of play

reminds me of the old plastic bundy reeds from the 1970s

Comments about Harry Hartmann Carbon Fiberreed Alto Saxophone Reed:

Extremely bright down low, and up high, but middle is dead. Not at all as expected, as I have used Fibrecane forever, and these do not get anywhere near those reeds.

Strength designation

Comments about Harry Hartmann Carbon Fiberreed Alto Saxophone Reed:

If you get the right strength for yourself and your mouthpiece, they play really well and have a wonderful sound. The negative side is that strength designation wears off very quickly and in six months I had no idea what the strength was that worked so well for me when I went to order another one. They are too expensive to experiment with if they end up in a pile that don't work.

Not Quite Right

Comments about Harry Hartmann Carbon Fiberreed Alto Saxophone Reed:

These reeds are good reeds but it was difficult to play notes in the altissimo register. I followed the reed chart on the manufacturer's website to make sure I ordered the right size. At $30 a reed, it is too expensive to just try over & over again & hope it works, especially when you have 4 reed instruments. The overall tone quality was affected a little, but if everything else worked out, it would be worth having a reed that won't dry or warp, etc. I was not allowed to exchange for a smaller size to determine if that's the problem.

Wow. Can't Complain!

Comments about Harry Hartmann Carbon Fiberreed Alto Saxophone Reed:

This reed is awesome. I can't say anything bad about it. My setup is the Yamaha custom EX. I play with a Vandoren Optimum lig and Yamaha Custom 4CM with the medium strength reed. I think may have found my setup. This reed is very free-blowing with impeccable response. The sound it puts out is very sweet, with a lot of juicy resonance. The volume it's capable of is unmatched by anything I've played. I'm in love with it!! Oh, and it looks stinkin' cool.

Terrible Reeds

Comments about Harry Hartmann Carbon Fiberreed Alto Saxophone Reed:

So I got this reed after reading all the reviews and decided to order one for myself. It turned out to be a big mistake!! The reed is SO sharp it cut my lip and cause not only for my lip to bleed a lot but cause me to stop playing that night. I have never had a reed to cut my lip at all. I have been playing sax over 16 years and never had that happen to me. I would not recommend this reed to anyone. It does not feel like a reed and i barely played on it for 15min when it cut my lip... You have been warned..

No longer a need for cane

By

Comments about Harry Hartmann Carbon Fiberreed Alto Saxophone Reed:

I'm a professional jazz saxophonist in Arizona that also teaches music at a public school. I've tried every type of cane reed you can think of...all types of vandorens (including the java, zz, red pack, and v16), ricos (regular/jazz select), even brands like hemke, zonda etc. I've also tried bari, fibracell, and legere synthetics. Bottom line is I was tired of the inconsistency and limited life of cane reeds and was not fond of the weired sound and feel of the synthetics. This one is a keeper, I've had mine since August of 2010 and even with a chip (my fault though I cut it with scissors and reshaped) still plays fantastically. I can play loud, quietly, I can play with an edgy sound, or a more rounded and mellow sound, I can play the bottom end of my horn with great sound and consistency etc...The feel on my lip is comparable to a cane reed though the cut is a little bit flatter and you can feel it at first. What completely blows me away is how this reed handles the altissimo range. With cane, it might pop and be full at first, but as the reed wears, eventually that range will get thin, weak, and who knows if it will even come out. With other synthetics, it might play this range ok, but the lower range suffers etc. I can pop those notes out all day, and the response is there. What is more, the power doesn't compromise what the reed does in subsequent sessions. Always the same response. I can't say enough good things about this thing. Like I said I chipped it by scraping it against a wall (no this reed is not fragile, I scraped it pretty hard) and all I did was use scissors to recut the tip into the original shape and then file it down a little bit with a straight edge. Plays as good as new. If you are careful there is no need to repair it. Bottom line is I know I can count on it to work the same everytime. I can also count on it to respond and work with me the way I want to shape my notes and sound. If you are a cane user, you'll never go back and will save a ton of money in the process:) The only advice I have is that you might want to order a size heavier than usual. For example, if you play a 3 (medium) right now, you might want to order a medium hard because I did notice that the reed was a little bit soft out of the box. It isn't a terrible issue and I probably fixed the issue when I repaired my chip. Great reed!

The Hartmann reed on my Yamaha also

By

Comments about Harry Hartmann Carbon Fiberreed Alto Saxophone Reed:

You won't believe this. I have been using a Hartmann alto reed (#8 or S?) for over 20 years (the same reed!). The name was so blurred I couldn't figure out until recently what brand it was, because I got it in 1991 with a sax I bought from a friend who moved away (I have no idea how long he played on it). I thought I should have a spare, so I went to a couple local music stores - they had no idea, wanted to sell me a Rico plastic coated - UGH. So now 20 years later I finally found it here on line. The reed is AMAZING. I play all styles from big band to combo and it never failes me. Only had to trim it once after a singer jammed it. It's not Desmond style sound, though I can do that - more cutting. But it is in tune in the high range on a Selmer C** mouthpiece, and has ample volume for any kind of music. I will never buy anything else but Hartmann.

Hartmann Fiberreeds - Thumbs UP!!!

By

from Delbarton WV

Comments about Harry Hartmann Carbon Fiberreed Alto Saxophone Reed:

I've been using the Harry Hartmann Fiberreeds for about 9 or 10 years now, have only bought 3 reeds during that time. I still had plenty of life in 2 of them I've been using, but decided to go ahead and order a spare. Having never tried the Carbon Fiberreed, I bought this version and it came in yesterday's mail. As usual, Harry Hartmann didn't disappoint. Although the reed was about $24 plus shipping, it was fabulous straight out of the box. I put it on my mouthpiece and was able to immediately go from the lowest to the highest notes on my sax without even a hiccup. Best thing about these reeds (which are seriously way above any synthetic or cane reeds I've ever tried) is that they are instantly ready and consistent use after use. They don't warp, dry out, and if they chip, I've found they're easily repairable by trimming with a good pair of scissors (only had to do that once, they're actually quite durable to be so flexible). Their response and tone are just unbelievable, you can bend a note on its ear and back with one of these reeds. I can't say enough about them except that I will never, ever go back to cane reeds, plastic coated reeds and other synthetics. They're expensive but they pay for themselves in terms of longevity. I've only thrown away one Fiberreed ever...had it for over five years before reluctantly chucking it. Just in case you've seen them in the catalog and wondered if they're worth the cost...well, yeah, they really are! Lisa
