I guess it's a matter of what you're used to, because I've been using cane reeds all my life and on the advice of a friend decided to try a Fiberreed. I normally play a 2 1/2, so I got a medium; this read squeaks and whistles like no cane reed ever has for me. Naturally, I don't use it all the time, and when I do I find it is getting easier to play. It's a lie to say it works right out of the box, though. I gave it two stars instead of one because I'm able to play it at all. I'm disappointed, because I thought I was going to be using this instead of cane reeds and saving lots of money on reeds.
I received this reed and found immediately that out of the box, it did not play well at all. I have had great success with the other Natural Fiberreed model, right out of the box as reported. The sound was stuffy, and extremely bright on my Runyon Quantum; my RPC, and my Meyer. So, I decided to start sanding (carefully) the vamp and sides, staying away from the tip, working slowly and playing it after each sanding. I would say this reed has potential, but it will require at least another hour to get it to play well. I will stick with the other Natural model, which is great for my needs. All this said, your experience may vary, but if you choose this model, be prepared to sand and modify it carefully. You may well like it.
