In 1888, George and William Haynes made their first flutes in a workshop in Boston thus beginning the Wm. S. Haynes Company. Previously, the two had worked as jewelers but were approached by a musician with the Boston Symphony who requested that they make him a flute. At this time nearly all flutes were wooden and so were those produced by the Haynes Company. By the early 20th century, they had developed a beautiful solid gold flute with silver keys. By this time their reputation for excellence had grown and countless professional musicians began to utilize the company’s flutes.

Around 1920, the principal flutist with the New York Symphony, George Barrere, developed a friendship with William Haynes and became the artistic adviser to the company. From this partnership emerged such models as the American version of the French model of flute. The addition of such musical expertise led to even more exceptional instruments which were soon widely admired by musicians of all skill levels.
