This is a well-engineered stand that is sturdy enough to support my heavy, double-rotor 1968 Conn 62H bass trombone. Once you figure out how to "unfold" the stand, it's a snap to set up and tear down (the included instructions, however, are a bit ambiguous). The neatest feature of the stand is that it's designed to fit in the bell of your trombone while transporting it inside your case or gig bag. The problem, however, is that it won't actually fit some cases. With my bass trombone, there was too much room between the bottom of the stand and the wall of the case, allowing the stand to bounce around inside the trombone bell -- not cool! Fortunately, I solved that problem by inserting a 5" x 6" x 1" piece of "spongy" foam between the end of the stand and the wall of the case to prevent the stand from moving during transport -- problem solved! However, when I tried to use the stand with my early 1970's King 3B tenor trombone, the opposite occurred. With the stand firmly inserted in the bell, there still wasn't enough room to get the horn's bell section to fit inside what is actually a cavernous coffin-case! (A friend has the same problem with this stand not fitting in his form-fitting trombone case.) In my case, the block that holds the trombone's main brace is fastened to a compartment cover with two screws. Although I haven't done it, yet, I plan to simply drill two new holes and reposition the holding block so that both the bell section and inserted stand will fit inside the case. I'm also a bit skeptical about how well the stand will work in a soft-sided gig bag. If you're able to sufficiently secure the stand to prevent it from bouncing around inside the trombone bell, then I think you'll be okay.

I bought this stand when I needed somewhere to put my trombone during the long resting periods that occur frequently when playing in a pit orchestra. I found that the stand supported my tenor trombone just fine. Putting the stand together was no trouble either, once I got the hang of it. When I switched instruments to a Bach Stradivarius and a Conn 88h, the stand still held my instruments true and true. However, right off the bat, the main neck of the stand seemed pretty rusty and hard to pull out when setting up the stand. This has gotten worse and worse over the two years that I have had the stand. There's still nothing wrong with the way the stand holds my trombones, but I'm worried about what the rust might lead to the malfunctioning of my stand, endangering the safety of my instruments.

I have been happy with this stand, being able to carry it in the bell of my large bore Blessing, but not in my King 3B with a coffin case. As a result, I had to carry it outside the case and the pad on the top of the stand fell off and I lost it. I haven't been able to get a replacement part, but my son is getting ready to replace his since it is rusty. I'll be able to use his old one for parts. Otherwise, I'm not sure I will replace it with the same stand.

Also forgot to mention that the fit of the stand in the ball varies. It is not recommended for small bore tenor trombones as it will stick out the bell, unless the case is big enough to accumulate the extra length. For Bass trombones, the stand will be deeper in the bell and there will be space between the stand and case end. Putting in a foam or something of the sort can help limit movement. The stand also includes a velvet bag for the stand to limit any scratches within the bell
