Dizzy turned me on to Al Cass valve oil in the mid-'70s, and it was great - real fast. As my horns have aged, the tolerances are not quite the same as they once were, and the Hetman 3 really does the job. I was initially concerned that the oil being a little "thicker" than Al Cass might also be a little slower, but it's not at all any slower. Just a nice fast, clean oil. The Hetman 3 is great, especially for older horns.
I used Al Cass for years. It was good. Wanted to try synthetic so I got Ultra Pure. It was good and I thought an upgrade over Al Cass. Then my piccolo trumpet valves started having major issues. Got them worked on by a pro repairman. They still had problems. While preparing to play the picc solo for Pictures in concert, I was getting worried. So I switched back to Al Cass and it mostly cleared up the problems. But then I sent for the Hetman's #1 since it was on sale. A friend had said his college teacher recommended it to all his students. Put it on my piccolo valves. Suddenly, my piccolo valves were FLYING! Super quick. I have a Yamaha 6810S and always thought the valves were sluggish--not sticking just slow and stiff. But now with Hetman's, all my valves on all my trumpets are super fast and easy. It makes my playing feel effortless now. And I put some on my Bflat tpt first and third valve slides and they are quick and easy like never before. I have let others try it and they notice a difference within seconds. I will NEVER buy anything else. I have the big refill bottle of Ultra Pure that I will let students or colleagues use now or just give away. I will only use Hetman's.
I got my Hetman oils (#1, #4, and #5) yesterday and after applying them, I have not ceased to be amazed at the durability, long-lastingness, and quality of these oils for my trumpet. Usually, with other oils, after I have played through my chromatic scale once or twice or played through one of the variations of the Carnival of Venice or practiced part of Moto Perpetuo, I have to re-oil. The frequent re-oiling was an impediment to my practice (and performances) and was a real hassle and annoyance. With Hetman oils, I have only been playing music with fast finger movements and I STILL have not needed to re-oil, let alone think about the movement of the valves! This is the best oil I have ever tried by far.
I hear musicians dicker over the "best" oil, whether due to lubricity, cost, durability, smell, or what have you, some even formulating their own solutions out of lamp oil or dish detergent(!) Having owned old piston horns (early 20th century), new (brand new Anderson's valve rebuild), and in-between for over 35 years, I've tried many different oils, both synthetic and organic, and I've settled on Hetman's as my go-to. The two biggest complaints I've heard against Hetman's are: cost & green gunk buildup. Cost: My two main horns are both >$8K, and I think nothing of spending money for accessories, transportation costs, music, and etc., so the difference between the cheapest and most expensive oils is relatively trivial, especially on an annual bases. I waste more on post-gig snacks than on valve oil. Besides, WWBW offers great pricing on the Hetman line, so the overall cost is nominal, anyway. Green Gunk: I do get slime buildup, particularly in the leadpipe and first valve, but haven't experienced it any more with Hetman's than with any other oil. One of my horns is particularly sensitive to buildup, so I keep a snake in the case. Even if I did associate gunk with Hetman's, easy regular maintenance renders it a non-issue. Benefits: Works: No jamming/sticking as with some of the super-premium super-slicks. Durability: I always oil my valves every time I use a horn, and I've never had to re-apply Hetman's during the same day. Flexibility: Some of my older horns have badly-worn valves, but the different Hetman grades all intermix well, so I can a drop or two of a heavier Hetman's to create the right viscosity. NON-STAINING: This is huge. My top action horns drip on my clothing, and the Hetman's washes out clean. That's a tremendous benefit to me, and the value in saved time and money far outstrips any premium that I pay for Hetman's oils. Bottom line: for me, Hetman's is a time-saving, frustration-eliminating "use it and play" solution.
