I first got this horn years ago as a gift while in college. At the time I had one regular professional gig and varying freelance paid gigs. This horn was exactly what I needed and wanted, and leading up to getting it I tried out every type of horn I could get my hands on (especially the CONN's). It's very easy to get a rich, warm, full tone from it. The low registers are deep and full. The highs are clean and clear. I've read reviews of holtons similar to this one that this horn is only good for small ensembles, and am perplexed by that. I have never had any problem making myself heard in full symphony orchestra or large bands. When I need to pierce through the group, the 280 does it wihtout a hiccup. When I need a full, powerful sound, the 280 does it in a way that adds the exact mix I am looking for, and I've had had better luck doing it with this horn than most I have run into playing the 8D. When I want to completely blend with the ensemble, the horn eases nicely in. Pitch is stable and predictable, and when soloing I have been able to produce a resonance with this horn that I have been complemented on numerous times. Are there better horns out there? Yes, I've found a couple that are usually for a much heftier price, but just the same I wouldn't trade this horn for anything.
