Getting Started On Drums
Tommy Igoe brings his 25 years of teaching and playing experience to bear, creating the first DVD for beginner drummers! He takes you on a journey that starts with taking a brand new drum set out of the box and gets you started making music right away.
Setting Up Your Drums! (Part 1) is dedicated to understanding your new drums. All of your drums and hardware, along with Tommy's unique "Power Square" concept, are covered in detail.
Start Playing! (Part 2) will get you playing and having fun right away. Tommy takes you through the basics of how to hold your sticks and how to use your pedals. He even brings out some young students to help demonstrate some great grooves and fills that you can play right away.
Special DVD features allow you to select Tommy playing each of the grooves super slowly so you can really take your time to work everything out. Play-along versions of each one are included, so that you can start jamming and making music right away!
Three-and-a-half hours of great material! Groove Essentials is based on the definitive collection of contemporary rock, jazz, R&B, funk, and world/ethnic drumming styles contained in the poster of the same name, developed by world-class drummer, teacher and author Tommy Igoe and Vic Firth drum sticks.
On this DVD, Tommy demonstrates 47 of today's most popular drum patterns, including a performance of each with a rhythm track played by some of New York's top players. This unique feature lets the student hear what each groove sounds and feels like with real music played by live musicians. Included among the drum patterns are 8th-note, 16th-note, and half-time rock; jazz waltz, shuffle and swing, R&B, hip-hop and funk as well as world music styles, including New Orleans second-line, reggae, Bossa Nova, Samba, Mambo, Cha-Cha, Bolero and Tango.
As a special bonus, the package includes a free Groove Essentials poster (courtesy of Vic Firth drum sticks), which contains fully-notated examples of every one of the 47 grooves on the DVD!

Comments about Hudson Music Tommy Igoe: Getting Started - Groove Essentials (DVD 2-Pack):
Tommy Igoe Grooves Essentials has risen to the top of the charts, so to speak, in the field of drum instructional DVD's. His work and Jojo Mayer's "Secret Weapons for the Modern Drummer" constitute the top two DVD series in the teaching of drums. Jojo Mayer goes over hand & stick technique at great length, which Tommy Igoe is brief on. Tommy Igoe complements Jojo's work, by teaching the individual the grooves that one plays in performing a song. (A groove is the sequence of what drum or cymbal to play, in what order, to make the music sound good; there are different styles of grooves, at different levels of complexity.) Tommy Igoe is a very good teacher, and doesn't get off on an ego trip like some others supposedly do. If you are a beginning drummer, this is a "must have" learning tool. If you already know how to set up a drum set, and know some basics, you might go straight to the second DVD you are getting in this product, the Essential Grooves. If this is the case, you might be better off in purchasing only that DVD, but in the package deal that includes the DVD, CD, and book. Either way, the Essential Grooves DVD comes with a wall chart that gives every groove in scored form, so having the book is more optional. Tommy also has another Essential Grooves DVD on the market now, so you can go yet further in learning more grooves... but this product will take you a long way into the knowledge of drumming. I recommend this product highly.
