The H&B 171 is for a .547" bore horn, not a modern bass trom

Comments about Humes & Berg 171 Bass Trombone Cup Mute:

I too mistakenly bought this thinking it would fit the 9.5" my Rath R9 and realized that it's too small, but then discovered that it's perfect for my Edwards 350, which has an 8.5" bell, so I kept it. It's not as consistent in tone across the range as a Tom Crown metal cup mute on the Edwards 350, but if you need that classic stonelined cup mute sound, say for swing-era music in a big band, this is it. A horn like the Edwards 350, Bach 42, Conn 88H, or King 5B would have been considered a bass trombone through the 1930s and 40s, but you would think H&B might have updated their designations in the past 60 years. Certainly by the 1980s .547 bore instruments were in common use by many symphony tenor players worldwide. The correct fiber cup mute for a modern bass trombone would be the H&B 199.

Do not buy this mute for a 9-1/2" bell bass trombone; it wil

Comments about Humes & Berg 171 Bass Trombone Cup Mute:

I bought this mute from WW&BW (through Amazon.com) for my Getzen 1052FD Bass trombone. Since my bell diameter is 9-1/2", and this is the smaller of the two Bass trombone cup mutes that Humes & Berg manufactures, this one should fit. You would logically think the Humes & Berg 199 large bore mute would be for 10" and 10-1/2" bells. Wrong!!! The 171 corks don't even touch the inside of the bell with mute shoved in all the way with the cup of the mute hitting the bell! The mute is much too small for my horn. The mute actually fits well in my 8-1/2" BELL BACH 42BO TENOR TROMBONE!!!!! To advertise this as a bass trombone mute is very misleading. I don't know of any modern day bass trombone this mute would fit. Maybe it would fit a bass trombone bell from the 17th century, when the bells were tiny. It was a waste of money! EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED!!!!
