played both Heckel and Puchner - Puchner comparable in every way

I ran across Puchners first in 1963, demonstrating bassoons at a conference. (I got) a demonstration instrument off the display and played it in the Indianapolis Symphony. Subsequently I purchased a Heckel so I can compare them. I was fortunate to still own the Puchner when I had to send my Heckel to Hugh Cooper to be completely rebuilt less than a year after I bought it. Depending on bocals and reeds, of course, both instruments were excellent. I always used Heckel bocals on both instruments, so that's one recommendation I have. As a qualification, I have not played a Puchner for quite a while, but the firm is the same, and the quality of workmanship is high. John S. Kitts-Turner, Professor Emeritus of Bassoon, School of Music, University of Florida.
