Jo Ral Copper Bottom Flugelhorn Bubble MuteThe Jo Ral Copper Bottom Flugelhorn Bubble Mute is classified as a wah-wah type mute. This is the only bubble mute made specifically for flugelhorns. It has a large bubble shape that allows for a free-blowing sound in all registers and provides a distinctive buzz sound appreciated by jazz musicians.

Very good contrast with the open, mellow flugelhorn sound. It is quieter than I thought it would be but I'm using a Wick 3 so that may have a lot to do with it. I double on trombone and this mute will work on trombone in all registers with the stem in but does not work in the low register with the stem out. Low range is great with or without the stem on flugelhorn. It is nice to have a mute designed just for flugel but an added bonus is that I can also use it for trombone.
I finally purchased this mute after using ill fitting trombone mutes (which of course they are designed for bone after all) I am currently playing the Barrington model flugel which is great as well . I wanted to play Flugel only but I would miss the Harmon style sound. Now I am able to play flugel exclusively. I hope that Jo-ral will offer ALL of their mute line as built for flugel . Great mute!
This mute sounds very close to a trumpet with harmon. To get the buzz associated with trumpet with harmon, one must play pretty loud on flugelhorn. Some may ask why any mute for flugel would ever be of use, and in my opinion, this mute has a few practical uses. I bought this mute because I am playing a theater show with very fast instrument and mute changes. Having this mute makes my life easier for some of those changes, and with it, I don't have to prepare the trumpet with the harmon mute while I play a passage on flugel. Also, if a dinner music gig comes up that someone may want to play mostly on flugel, but a few tunes with a harmon sound, this mute could facilitate only bringing one horn. I'm sure there are more uses, but these are the two I can think of.
great looking mute, very good construction as in all the jo-ral mutes, but alas, it doesn't fit a Benge FL-5 flugel, the bell flare is just too big for the mute, can't "grab" on to anything, maybe an FL-1 or 3 ?, or another brand of flugel, but the FL-5, sorry, it's a no-go,........... bummers
I bought this mute just for the fun of it, and I really like it! With my flugelhorn, this mute has a much different harmon sound that a trumpet. It has the buzz still, but there is more of an airy, puffy sound to it as well. It has a few tuning issues, but then again, what mute doesn't?
