I've played on many pieces over the years - both metal and hard rubber. I like my Beechler metal for the pop and modern sounds - it has a clean laser-like quality. This Jody piece is different, nothing like a metal sound. Without the spoiler - the sound is classic big band, perfect for section work. It is smooth, kinda dark and round, with a bit of an edge if you push it. Flexibility is okay. Put the spoiler in, and you've got a completely different mouthpiece, and different sound. The spoiler lets you push it so loud you'll out-play the trumpet section. The spoiler lets you have flexibility not found in most mouthpieces. This comes with a price though. If you don't know your horn, or are new to all this, you'll have a tough time controlling it with the spoiler. The spoiler gives you a pretty rough edge when you push it, and can let you whisper a deep round subtone in an instant. You are basically getting two mouthpieces in one. It is definitely NOT a metal sound, but it is a great piece to keep in the case - for those fake book jam sessions and big band jobs. My Optimum ligature helps the sound, but it doesn't fit very well. The body of this piece is a bit smaller than most hard rubber pieces. After playing for another week - I like this piece a lot. Altissimo speaks effortlessly, and once you figure this thing out (with the spoiler) it is a really nice piece. I cut the center section out of the Rovner ligature that comes with the mouthpiece - the single layer - and put it between my Optimum ligature on the top of the mouthpiece (opposite the reed and screw) and it fits much better. I've found that Vandoren blue box reeds work very well with this mouthpiece - and the Vandoren Javas (green box) really expand the flexibility with a funky edge. Rico are okay - but without a centered sound. LaVoz are pretty junky with this piece - at least for me. I like the sound without the spoiler better than my old New York Meyer.
I went to the local music store to try out a new jazz piece, and asked the guy what he recommended. He pulled this little gem off the shelf and told me that nothing else he had came close to this. WOW! was he right! This mouhpiece is without a doubt the best jazz mouthpiece I have ever played. It is free blowing and ridiculously loud. It allows for complete control and manipulation of the sound. I would especially reccoment this mouthpiece to anyone playing a cannonball big bell sax, as it allowed me to reach the full potential on that horn.
This mouthpiece wont let you down if you dont want the edge of a Metal mouth piece, but still want to project a great sound. The Jody Jazz Classic lets you play soft for classical, but can still let you project out for a jazz solo. Good choice for the serious student who still needs to stay off metal.
It is a great mouthpiece to have to use for the many styles of music out there.
I bought this piece and have played it for a little while now. I can say that the piece is very reed picky but in a good way. Different brands play completely differently from each other. I like to use Rico select Jazz 2H and Vandoren ZZ 2 1/2. With the Rico's the mouthpiece was medium dark with a little edge and had good tounging capabilities while with the spoiler in it was brighter and edgier than before amazing projection and faster tounging. With the ZZ's the tone was bright and edgy not as much as the rico with the spoiler in and it had good tounging. With the spoiler in the tone seemed tubby and bland. Overall a great product and I would always recommend it. This product is a work of art and I can see the quality that Jody Espina is know for.
