Jody Jazz HR* Tenor Saxophone MouthpieceThis special hard rubber has the look, feel and sound of vintage hard rubber. Each mouthpiece is faced on a special machine and is then finished by hand. The HR* (pronounced HR star) produces a beautiful warm sound with free-blowing ease. This Hard Rubber Saxophone Mouthpiece features a round, medium size chamber. The HR* is suited for Traditional Jazz, Big Band, Straight-Ahead and Bebop, but also has enough power for more modem styles. This is a favorite of band directors for its ability to blend in with a section.

Impossible to play this mouthpiece in tune. My old Selmer mouthpiece works much better.
I have been playing saxophone for 25 years. In that time I have played many of the best known (and expensive) mouthpieces on the market. The instant I tried my friends HR 7*, I knew I needed to have one. It has a very balanced sound from the bottom of the range up to altissimo. It is free blowing with a very warm sound that still projects. It can be played in a whisper from the low Bb up to the top of the range, and the full spectrum of dynamics is easily playable, from ppp up to a honking fff. The best mouthpiece I have ever played.
I'm a lead tenor player in our community college big band. I'm playing a very bright Yamaha 61 tenor and I needed a good HR piece that would calm this horn down alittle, give me a more even tone, and help improve the even-ness of the scale.
This mouth-piece has accomplished these goals very well. I find the HR to provide me with surprising versatility and responds quite well to reed selection. It seems to prefer non filed reeds, I'm currently using ZZ's. With an ultimate lig.
I feel for section playing and jazz combo work this is a fine mouth piece you wont be disappointed with. As a starting point try the 7* and go from there.
I'm not going to give this piece a 5 star rating because I'm not a professional player. Just trying to give an honest assessment.
I had read that these were like the vintage HR link that Getz played and I was trying to get a warmer Getz-like sound for restaurant playing. The 8 I got had a great sound if you wanted a Meyer style Rollins sound , but it was to bright for me.
I may try the 10. George Garzone gets a very Getzy sound with it.
I now have in my collection 3 rather good mouthpieces. I have the 8* Jody Jazz HR, an 8* Otto Link HR and a 10* Otto Link new York Metal. Each differs a bit. For sheer projection the metal is best. Of the two HRs the Jody Jazz has the better control but the Otto Link is just slightly smoother in tone. The Jody Jazz is probably the best crafted as it will give a little better attack on low notes and produces a consistant tone across the whole register. it looks like tradeoff is the name of the game when choosing mouthpieces. Don't be afraid to buy the Jody Jazz. It is a good addition to any collection. I am using it more than the others at least for the time being.
