Traditional yet versatile, great for blend or soloing.

Jody Jazz HR* Tenor Saxophone Mouthpiece
This special hard rubber has the look, feel and sound of vintage hard rubber. Each mouthpiece is faced on a special machine and is then finished by hand. The HR* (pronounced HR star) produces a beautiful warm sound with free-blowing ease. This Hard Rubber Saxophone Mouthpiece features a round, medium size chamber. The HR* is suited for Traditional Jazz, Big Band, Straight-Ahead and Bebop, but also has enough power for more modem styles. This is a favorite of band directors for its ability to blend in with a section.

"What a great piece!"

I?m a professional sax player in Las Vegas and I?m writing to say how thrilled I am with my Jody Jazz HR7* tenor mouthpiece. I?ve been searching for years for a piece that would translate the sound I heard in my head to the real world. I?ve been through the whole list of tenor mouthpieces: Link, Lawton, Vandoren Jumbo Java, Berg, Meyer, and a gold plated Vandoren V16 (my wife almost fell over when she saw the $300 bill for that one). I was about to give up my search and put down the tenor for good until I tried the HR. I love the big, warm sound I get from the HR; round and full with just the right amount of edge and great projection. Depending on my ligature/reed set-up I can cover every gig with this one mouthpiece: straight-ahead jazz, R&B, rock, fusion. This piece makes playing tenor a joy again. What a great mouthpiece!

This mouthpiece is incredible! I tried out a couple of these pieces and was absolutely ready to buy the 7 until I played a used 9*. WOW! I play the 9* on a silver Rampone R1 Jazz with Brancher Jazz 3.5s, and it's got the smoothest most incredible response all the way up AND down! I had been having trouble with my low end on this horn, but I think the big open chamber was the ticket. I was very skeptical of a .125 tip, but it's really a great playing piece. Note: the altissimo is hard. Moving up in reeds will help.

I contacted Jody Espina directly thru his website to solicit his opinion on which of his pieces I should try in order to get a very controllable vintage jazz sound that retained body in the tone in order to play a better jazz ballad. I mentioned that I was using a friend's New York Meyer. He suggested I try on a trial basis the HR* 6 and the ESP 6. I thought the HR* 6 had a real nice tone. It was very warm with some bite at the edge of the sound. I thought it sounded a lot like the New York Meyer medium a friend was loaning me, but with very slightly more crispness. I would have no reservations whatsoever playing this piece on a jazz gig. My only reservation was that I needed to have a real stiff reed in there to get a subtone down to low C or so with my particular horn. The HR* 6 really sounded nice, and for the money, it's a steal, considering Jody plays every piece before it goes out. The only reason I didn't keep the HR* was because the ESP absolutely knocked me out, and I couldn't afford to keep both. For players looking for a New York Meyer-ish vintage sound without the price premium, this piece comes pretty darn close! I may go back and buy this one too for some versatility when finances improve a little. Its combination of edge and tone actually seemed to be *in between* the ESP 6's two sounds (with and without the ESP's spoiler inserted).

I have been playing a lot of tenor the past year, and I have had a lot of difficulties in getting just an even tone from register to register. This mouthpiece solved all of those problems. I have used a Bari, Guardala, Links, and several others and this just gives me such a smooth even tone. Altissimo is great and in tune. I got the 8. I felt like it was the easiest to play and get a big dark sound. I use jazz select 3 med filed.

This is the mouthpiece that made me enjoy HR again. I bought one of these mouthpieces just on a whim. I normally play Otto Link stm 8* bought a jody jazz HR* 8*. I like this mouthpiece as a great tonal alternative to my metal, very well constructed, rails were even and thin with a nice sized window. I use a Vandoren trad #3-3 1\2 nice warm lush sound plenty volume, then Java or V16 reeds offer a nice bright, round tone with good edge. I can get a nice sub tone to a rippin Joe Henderson tone and many variations in between. This mouthpiece performs with a solid core all throughout the horn, Great low end, I had a problem with being a little thin above palm D and up -with a little time to get used to the mouthpiece I feel the tone is nice and even now, but the Altissimo is still not as easy as on my metal mouthpieces. Overall the mouthpiece offers a classic sound to my set up and (has) easily become one of my favorite mouthpieces. No wonder George Garzone is a endorses this mouthpiece.
