Jones Double Reed Products grew from tinkering on a kitchen table to producing thousands of reeds per year. Dr. Wendal S. Jones began making reeds for his music students at The University of Arizona. Soon, other teachers and music professionals began to recognize the quality of Dr. Jones’ reeds and began to request custom reeds. As demand grew, Jones decided that he needed to expand his production center from his home. Unsatisfied with the available equipment for mass production, Jones developed his own machinery. He created a profiling machine which was able to produce four different patterns of the scrape allowing for him to still customize individual reeds. The company has grown and is now manufacturing reeds in Spokane, WA with employees ranging from former artists to professional musicians. Today, Jones Reeds produces over 120,000 oboe reeds and 65,000 bassoon reeds per year.
