I have been playing bassoon for a bit over a year now. With such a large and challenging instrument the little things-like your reed- can make all the difference. The Jones reeds are very constant and easy to break in. I would recommend them to any beginning bassoonist who does not have a source for hand made reeds.

I have been playing bassoon for 25 years. I used to use exclusively Jones reeds because I could just take them out of the box and play them without any scraping, etc. Since Jones went out of business, I haven't found a reed that I like. I was so excited to see Jones back, but these aren't the same reeds. They are wider and don't play as well as the original reeds. The scrape is uneven and, when looking at them from the tip, you can see the reed "waving". Gower reeds are more like the original Jones reeds. I think I will use them from now on.

          Comments about Jones Bassoon Reed:

I don't play for hours each day so I like this reed, is easy to play on and doesn't tire the mouth. It does break down faster than a harder reed though.

If you have been playing bassoon for more then a year and you know you are going to play it for the next year and beyond then buy other brands. DO NOT BUY JONES!!! I have tried Emerald and Singing Dog and both are good options.

Great for "doublers" and old bassoons

          Comments about Jones Bassoon Reed:

Apparently these have seen a quality decline in recent years (but then again, what hasn't?), but after this clarinet native has wasted fortunes trying to find a 'perfect' market reed, I can say that these have been the most consistently acceptable to me. I've been playing bassoon for over a year now (with aid from 8+ years of clarinet) and have settled with just buying a few MH Jones reeds and using/tweaking them through their lifespan (which is fairly long for me even when I played with a very active community band). I do not agree with the statement about poor high register; my precious is about as base as you can get with no F# tr, rollers, 'G-res' or 'high D and E' keys yet I have no trouble playing the Rite of Spring intro although that might be my setup (a pre-war Kohlert that looks as great as it sounds and a brass Benchmark G2 bocal that was a steal at $130). They are a bit wide but I welcome that, I wouldn't say as much so for beginners. These reeds work great with older bassoons without question.

          Comments about Jones Bassoon Reed:

I have to agree...these are not the same reeds! As an intermediate player with limited knowledge of how to adjust reeds, I loved the Jones. They were usually very playable without much adjustment. The last several I have received are pretty much unusable. I just thought it was me! I guess not!

I wouldn't even use this as a starter

          Comments about Jones Bassoon Reed:

These reeds are horrible, all the wrong sizes and almost impossible on high notes, honestly, you couldn't do much worse than Jones for bassoon reeds. I have played bassoon for seven years now and ever since I began playing I have loathed these reeds. They are far too long and far too wide and the wires often break if one attempts to adjust them. for those just starting, do not use them unless you have no other option. They will ruin your mouth position and teach you to bite, which are both horrible.
