Jones Oboe ReedThe Jones oboe reed is one of the few commercial oboe reeds available with the long scrape used by nearly all professionals. Finest French cane is sorted, selected, and processed by skilled craftsmen, then the reeds are created using the world's most advanced reed machinery. Each reed is individually tested and adjusted by hand. Nearly every reed receives some hand scraping before final inspection and packaging.

I've recently been trying out various oboe reeds and came across these and love them! I've bought several of these reeds and they usually produce a nice, dark tone that is consistent from day to day. I gave it 4 stars because I've had a couple that have produced a 'quacky' sound instead of a favorable sound, but it was fixable with a little adjustment here and there. These reeds are a good choice for the beginning player and/or the player that doesn't have time to make his/her own reeds. The medium reeds seem a little hard to me, but it's nothing that a little scraping can't fix.
I cannot tell you how happy I was when I tried my first Jones reed ? and how even happier I was when it played that way the next day and the next! After trying a number of different reeds and struggling with inconsistent quality, I was thrilled to find these. They have a mellow but crisp tone and hold up to playing far longer than other reeds I have tried. Before Jones, my oboe sounded muffled, tentative, and squeaky, the notes were hard to hold and seemed to wander off pitch. After Jones, my oboe sounds strong, certain, and on target. I was a beginning oboe student and I was frankly turned off because of all the trouble with other reeds, but these reeds saved me; the oboe is a very tricky and challenging instrument. Why make it harder with reeds that do not perform well? The reeds are extremely well made, and not one has split, frayed, or collapsed. I am not at the point where I can make my own reeds. Until then, Jones is the first choice and is a blessing, knowing I will not be struggling with the reed and letting me concentrate on other aspects of my playing.
I have been buying these reeds for months. I have tried many of them and the reeds do not need much time to soak and it has a consistent sound. For me, the reeds last a long time even when played on alot. The best thing about the reeds is all but 1 of the many reeds I tried, is that they all have a rich and nice sound.
