Playing on the model 470 for three years now

I'm retired and playing in summer bands for years now (senior player). I own the model 470 lacquer which is a copy of the Yamaha 4 valve instrument. For the non-professional player it is ideal; also ideal for those who double. With 4 valves the instrument plays better in tune in the low register; that is notes below low F concert pitch. Using false fingerings you can almost make a complete scale to low Bb concert. Instrument has a real singing quality. For pros you of course want a compensating euphonium; but this is a real player for those who are not professional majors on the instrument.I have no breaking up problems with a proper mouthpiece fitted for you.

Good Horn For the Money

By

I have been playing a school owned Jupiter 470 since 8th grade (laquer model in 8th grade and the silver model through high school) and I have found them to (overall) be excellent instruments. The only issue I've found with them is that they dent easily, and in the upper register (6th partial and above), the tone breaks up. It has a full lower register, and is capable of producing a beautiful singing sound in the middle range. I think it is a great horn for high school and good middle school musicians, but if someone is going into music as a profession, this is definitely not a horn that will take you very far beyond high school. I have played Yamaha 321s before and found them no better than the Jupiter. It is also very flexible. I used it to play a few small group pieces for jazz and it fit in very well. I recommend this instrument for school programs, but if you are looking for a personal instrument, you might want to save up a little more for a Nirschl or King.
