Where to start with this massive thing... I am currently using this in my summer drum corps (Bushwackers DCA) and it is a great horn. The amount of sound that will come out of the front of this thing still surprises me, and yet its just as easy to play soft and delicate. It is a bit hefty, scratch that, its pretty hefty and a pain in the butt to carry around at practice (myself being 5'8 and about 130lb). The tone on this is very centered even while playing at ffff, and at ppp. Overall I would recommend this to anyone that can carry it as it is a great buy.
Although heavy, it puts out great sound and deserves special attention. Constant practice with it would make it seem lighter; I know that from personal experience.
This thing was designed from the ground up to sound great, and maintain a clear focused sound even when being played where other tubas would be splitting their tone. This is great for generating oodles of sound, and you will be hard pressed to get the sound to crack even if you are pushing fff. Due to the small bore size, the bottom register (below the 2 ledger line Bb) feels slightly restricted when I compare it with other larger bore tubas. I count this as a good thing, since that makes it equally hard to get the tone to split in the high or the low register. It weights 30 pounds which is very heavy for a contra style tuba. Yamaha and i'm pretty sure king, are lighter. So you will need to work a lot harder to hold this if you are used to playing on a yammy contra. Ergonomics: It balances slightly forwards at carry/attention, you will feel the top trying to tilt forwards. At playing position, the weight is not balanced on your shoulder but more on your hands. First time I played it, (about 12-16 hours in 3 days) arms could barely hold it at playing position for say, 10 minutes. After sufficient conditioning, this problem went away. Its a bit of a trick to get your right hand in the right spot to hold it for carry/attention since there is a screw sticking out right where you would naturally want to put your hand. Since we wear white gloves my right glove got a hole in it where that screw was. The kick out slide for tuning worked great for me, brought my notes into tune good, and is comfortable to use. Overall, this tuba sounds great, and will take all the air you can blow and then ask you, "Is that all?" Since it is so heavy, (probably to do with why it sounds so good), I would not recommend it for high schools unless you have a bunch of linebackers for a tuba section.(Or a sick conditioning program).
The tuba has a good sound to it but is kinda of heavy for the smaller tuba players.
