As a tuba player, I do not like slides. If it doesn't have 3 or 4 valves, I probably won't play it. This was a problem for my school's jazz band, as an army of saxophones booted me off Bari and into the trombone section as the bass trombone player. The slide wasn't going well, partially because the school's bass trombone was broken, and I was looking for an alternative, as was my director. Then I found this. I've been playing the valved trombone for over a year and it's the best non-tuba instrument I've played (I've played saxophones of all types, as well as baritone horn, euphonium, and clarinet). While it isn't capable of the neat stuff a slide trombone is, this trombone blends beautifully with the other conventional slide trombones and allows me to play much quicker than the rest of the section. Being second trombone, I solo a lot, and I have absolutely no issues with soloing. This valved trombone can pack the punch of 1st chair tenor slide trombone in a jazz band as well as the soft intricacies of any trombone player in an orchestral/symphonic setting. I'm able to get false tones that are well below the instrument's range, and I am also able to get insanely high. Over all, it's an amazing alternative for those who do not wish to use a slide trombone or someone looking to double in any band, and it's minor faults are easily overlooked.
The Jupiter valve trombone is great for situations when a trombone sound is required, but there is no room for a slide. It also works well to have a baritone player on it to "buff up" the size of the trombone line. BUT... it is what it is. It does not have the power of a baritone or the resistant free blowing capability of a trombone. In some ways it is the best of both worlds... in other ways it is the worse. Personally, I like it enough for group work, but would not solo on it.
I bought this about a year ago and couldn't be unsatisfied with it. I use it mostly for Regional Mexican music, which includes Banda, Tierra Caliente, and various spanish pop music. This is a great investment, especially for the price! It produces a great, loud, powerful tone, while still being mellow and easy-blowing. For jazz users or other music that mostly is acostumed to slide bones, I suggest you stick to the slide, cause this won't give you that nice full tone you're looking for (although it is useful for trumpet players who want a bone sound without having to learn slide positions, since all the valve combinations are the same). Great buy, at a great price, and I got to admit, the Lacquer finish looks really good on-stage!
