Purchased this horn in dec. 2005..... I have been playing it for 8 months now. The horn gets a great tone and is very comfortable to hold. The 4th valve tuning is typical of non-compensating horns (sharp everywhere), but I do not find this a great drawback on most material. I encountered a very sticky 1st valve after a few weeks of playing and got very frustrated. In desperation I stopped using the jupiter oil and went to blue juice. The problem is almost non-existent now.....I have found that I need to pull nearly all the slides to tweak the tuning of this horn, but again -a minor thing. Overall, I'm pretty satisfied.
I rented a brand-new JEP-570 for three weeks during a recent trip to Germany (I did not want to risk transporting my own horn, a British instrument made in a one-man workshop). I gave the Jupiter a good workout and can share the following impressions: POSITIVES: clean workmanship for the price point; close-fitting valves that became very smooth after three weeks; basic scale respectably in-tune; large-shank receiver allows many mouthpiece choices. NEGATIVES: I found it difficult to get the horn to 'speak' easily; breath attacks did not resonate easily in the horn, nor was it easy to get tonguing attacks to really 'pop' with clarity. I also found its dynamic range to be limited at the loud end.
I bought this horn in Dec, 2007 and played with it as a senior in high school. I used it for state band try outs and I made first chair. This instrument provides a warm clean tone and is a very comfortable hold. I also encountered a very sticky first valve after a couple weeks after using Jupiter oil and I am now using blue juice and the problem is gone. The tuning in my instrument (as it may not be in other instruments) was almost perfect and I also found that even though it is a non compensating instrument, the fourth valve was pretty in tune, and all in all this is a very good instrument.
This instrument has it all, the tone, the look, and the smoothness of the valves make it an all around excellent instrument.
I bought the 570 for my 11-year old son. This is his second instrument. His first had 3-valves (also a Jupiter) and could not be used effectively in the lower portion of the range. He needed the 4th valve. The Jupiter 570 is one of the few 4-valve, non-pro horns with the 4th valve on the side. This is the only style of 4-valve horn that his 11-year old hands can handle. He is about to start his third year and he is really taking off. He has a true low e-flat and a petal B-flat. His instructor is very pleased with his tone and intonation on this horn. This is our second Jupiter and it is the best horn for the money for a young player. If he continues to play at the university level and beyond-- then he will move up to a compensating horn. I am a cornet player and we blend together great!
