My university marching band purchased a section's worth of these to replace our aging CONN 20Ks. We were thrilled at first but now, 4 years later, not so much. I really want to like these horns, they're nice to play and the 4th valve was a cool novelty for me, but there's just too much wrong with them. Problem #1: They have a much lower center of gravity than the CONNs I'm used to. Horn swings require more effort and shoulders start to hurt more quickly than with other models. In the grand scheme of things though, this isn't so bad. Problem #2: This is also not a big deal and technically not a problem with the horn itself BUT is still an issue. The cases for these horns are not very well-made. After just three years, 80% of our cases no longer have functioning wheels. This is sort of a deal breaker when you have to schlep a tuba around the music building. If you're going to buy these tubas, get yourself a second set of cases. You're gonna need them. Problem #3: This issue is a HUGE problem. We took care of these tubas like children when we first got them but they are the most fragile things I've ever played. Our CONNs lasted AT LEAST 10 years and there was nothing wrong with them that couldn't be attributed to age. The Jupiters started to fall apart after just a few years and they died spectacular deaths in ways one would not expect from a quality instrument. Soldering broke off on many of them and the valve portion separated from the rest of the horn on at least 3 occasions. We had to learn very quickly how to use shoelaces and tape to hold them together. Overall, these horns look great in the beginning but that's about it. My recommendation: spend the extra money and get something better (like a CONN or a Dynasty). You WILL end up saving money in the end.
This sousaphone is awesome, the 4 different tuning bits makes it really good to set an orientation, the valves are very responsive, the intonation and tone are awesome, the case is nice, and this is very comfortable with or without padding! Marched this for MGAMB 2010 and it is well worth the money.
