If you're not ready to shell out a couple grand (or more) on a pro sax, this may very well be the best alto sax out there for the money. It might not have the tone/perfect intonation of a pro yamaha or selmer, but this sax will serve anyone more than well enough throughout high school/possibly college. I even know some players who play it at pro gigs. Smooth key action, sounds great in a variety of settings (I play it in both a jazz big band and a classical woodwind ensemble, with different mouthpieces) and overall very well constructed. Mine does have some minor intonation issues, but that is really my only criticism. Jupiter really delivered with this sax.
Made of nice hefty brass - I played countless weddings on one of these, for 15 years. It is NOT the same as my Super Action 80, but it is quite an acceptable horn for commercial jobs. High register intonation is okay, though not state of the art.
When trying horns for students, I came across a Jupiter 767 and was blown away. The sound is huge, live, and effortless. The low register is easy and the altissimo is effortless. I sold my silver Conn Chu alto and now use this as the backup/road horn to my Mark VI. This plays so much easier and brighter than my VI that I even use this for Contemporary stuff when I'm not in a studio.
plays well :)
If you are looking for a saxophone that is affordable and plays well, I would go with this one. I play with a size 3 reed and usually canÆt get out the high notes.
