This is a horn that was very well thought out. It may be based on a Benge, but is more in tune and has plenty of character. The 1000 is a lighter horn that doesn't sound like one. There is plenty of core with a rich quality and doesn't seem too bright, even with a shallow high compression mouthpiece. Valves needed some breaking in. A high quality oil makes them fast (Hetman #1 works wonders). I have played many great horns including the Yamaha 8335LA, Callet Jazz, Lawler Model T, and Wild Thing. The Chicago 1000 is my favorite!
My horn has been wonderful. Once I reverted back to my favorite oil (think it is a chemistry issue for me) the valves are smooth fast very responsive. Horn speaks easily in all registers and carries and edge when every you want even down low. Found it to be my favorite horn ever played. Played a bunch. Included CG3 mouthpiece and ProTec Triple (yeah it is a triple) case are really nice.
Highly recommend at least play testing this horn. Classic sound and the ability to light up on the drop of a hat. Wonderful.
Awesome valves and very flexible, responsive instrument. Clear sound that has good harmonics and a great dynamic range. It is mouthpiece sensitive in a good way. It can accentuate a change more than other horns. Can easily have bark in to lower register and will really light up up high if you ask it too.
It has a classic sound that easily lends itself to a lead style/commercial sound.
My favorite horn.
I have both this and the Benge 3X. What a wonderful sound. Very rich and reactive sound. It is mouthipece sensitive (in a good way). Valves are flawlessly smooth on Ultra Pure oil.
Depending on mouthpiece it can be from almost a sterile dead sound (like my 20D2d that I am normally very bright on even my 3X) to a laser. It can really zip even in the mid and lower register. You might try some alternate mouthpieces to find one that really shines how you like. Heck make sure to try the CG3 that comes with it too. Very nice.
Build quality is excellent and everything works great. The ProTec triple gigbag is really nice too.
The Kanstul Chicago model MLP is a good horn for upper register but I'm experimenting problems with the 2nd and 3rd (piston) it doesn't move as it suppose to.
