I play a lot of weddings. Trumpet Voluntary is easiest to play with the A pipe in on a standard pic. But that is the only piece that changes. Really? If you are going to ask the horn to play half a step down, shouldn't the TUNING slides be TUNED as well to compensate!!!? I can't tell you what a positive difference the A tuning slides that connect to each valve make. It enables a pic to slot like a flugel. Weddings can be stressful and pic is already hard enough as it is, why not make it as easy and in tune as possible? This is a tremendous instrument and my confidence and abilities have increased dramatically. Suddenly solo pic gigs have turned into just another gig. Absolutely. Questions? www.brianswitzer.com
There are several things that make this a fantastic piccolo trumpet, the best for me is the slightly larger bore than most other horns which allows me to go back and forth from my Bb and C trumpets to my piccolo easier. It also gives me a bigger sounding low range and for me an easier and a little higher upper range. Most piccolo trumpets including Schilke only change the lead pipe when changing the key of the horn but this particular Kanstul changes the bell and the slides as well as the lead pipe. It all amounts to better intonation, everything slots well with very little effort, and a great sounding horn. The fact that you end up with a respectable G trumpet as well is wonderful bonus. There is no doubt in my mind that this is a horn that everyone should try if they are buying a piccolo trumpet.
When I started looking for a piccolo trumpet, I wanted something that could use a trumpet mouthpiece with good intonation, and a bore size close to that of my trumpet. I also debated on whether to get a G trumpet or a piccolo trumpet. Considering that, the Kanstul 1520 seemed to be my only choice, but after getting one, I was highly impressed. Intonation is great regardless of whether you tune it to Bb, A, or G (as long as you remember to use the 3rd slide and the 1st trigger), and the sound is incredible. But the best part is, despite all the talk about piccolo trumpets being difficult to play, I actually found the Kanstul 1520 to be easier to play than my trumpet, not harder. The only issues I have with it are: the 2nd slide is fixed and there is only one trill slide for all 3 keys; also, I'd prefer a rounded bell tail, like the Schilke P7-4; and optional sterling bells would be nice. But that's minor stuff - overall: an outstanding horn.
