Great things do come in small packages, and Kanstul has delivered with this horn. Small and compact, but it still has weight and a definite mass to the horn. The work that was put into the R&D of this horn has paid off as I haven't found a similar horn (under 8-10k) that sounds like these horns do. A friend bought a Bb Kanstul from a friend and the two of us sound so alike that it is scary at times. Best horn I have found for the money. The only down side of the horn is two placements of tuning, both for the Main Tuning slide (a little long and hard to get out to clean), and the 2nd valve tuning slide (really hard to get to b/c it is in the middle of everything). Last thing, if you can afford the 5-Valve, get it. It is the best investment I made.
This horn is beautiful. I bought mine from my tuba professor, after him owning it for 9 years. It still looks brand new. The low register is smooth, and the upper register sings. This tuba is heavier than you would think, which helps give it a sound that rivals many 4/4 horns. On mine at least though, the G below middle C is constantly sharp, and the 2nd valve slide is very difficult to reach. But for sheer playability, this is an excellent horn for any quintet, brass band, concert band, or wind ensemble. My professor even managed to make it work in the Symphony Orchestra that he is in.
