I have played the same Bach Strad 37 for over 35 years (though not continuously). I decided that I would like to have a pocket trumpet to take with me when I travel to conferences (my paying job is philosophy professor). I decided to spring for the Kanstul in spite of its higher price tag because of the company's reputation for quality. It's only the second horn I've purchased in almost 40 years, so I found it easy to rationalize this expenditure.
In spite of the obvious weakness in my reasoning, I am very pleased with this purchase. I read lots of reviews of pocket trumpets before buying, so I knew to expect that any pocket trumpet is going to be tricky, intonation-wise. Certainly this horn does not slot as well and is less accurate than my beloved Bach Strad.
That said, I LOVE the sound I get from my Kanstul pocket. It's got a little more of a mellow, cornet-like sound, but it is a big and rich sound, and the horn is very responsive. I wouldn't recommend it for playing demanding classical material, but I play a lot of jazz and blues, and it is terrific for that. In my blues band I play a lot with a plunger and some with a Harmon mute (stem in). For that, I really prefer the pocket to a regular trumpet because your mute hand is very close up. Also, you can support a lot of the weight of the horn with your mute hand, which is close to the horn's center of gravity. I have always found on a regular trumpet that playing with a plunger reduces my dexterity on the valves because I am hanging the full weight of the horn from the thumb and pinky of my right hand. That effect is greatly reduced with the pocket. This was an advantage that I did not anticipate.
One more thing that I suspect is true of all pocket trumpets: there are more curves where water can accumulate than there are water keys. If you play one, be prepared to share the travails of our French-horn playing friends who have to turn their horns around to get all of the water out!
